Did you call Nikon Or Nikon USA (or maybe you got someone that did not work in repairs)? I think Nikon will honor the warrantee but it will need to be sent to a repair center from the orign of the receipt (maybe Turkey). Nikon USA will not touch it if it is not a US serial number. Read up on the web site and don't trust someone on the phone who might not know company policy (get it in writing). If you want to be able to send back a new camera, don't open it.

Either story is possible here. It would not be unknown for a company's actual behavior to contradict stated policy. In this case it might even be smart. Make intimidating statements to discourage US customers from buying "gray market" cameras. Then when one actually comes in, work on it for cash anyway. This prevents the customer from making too much of a stink and possibly hurting the brand, and actually costs the company little or nothing.

That is the FIRST time I've EVER hear of Nikon being willing to fix a gray market item, even for a fee.

I hope it's true.

Everybody seems to be making such a HUGE deal of this, while folks buy inexpensive grey market cameras on eBay all the time. My seller says it is NOT grey market and has a NIKON one year warranty. I have alerted my bank, nonetheless because of all the well meaning "shouting and screaming".

Truth be told, I think everything will work out just fine and there has been excess DRAMA here. BUT We shall see. . . and however it turns out, THE SUN WILL CONTINUE TO RISE.

Several years ago I bought a Nikon D1h , it was used so I didn't expect any warranty . I sent the camera to Nikon for a firmware update ( D1 series had to be done by Nikon ) . I received a call stating my camera was Grey Market and they were sending it back to me . Now this was a free update and they would'nt do it even after I offered to pay . I really don't see them doing any type of repair thats going to actually cost money to any Grey Market item .

There are human beings working at these places. Neither you nor I know how much discretion they have. Yesterday my wife grabbed a plant she though was marked $5.98 at Home Depot. At the register it scanned $15.98. My wife said that was too much and she didn't want it at that price. The clerk just subtracted $10 from the price and my wife got her plant.

If you made enough of a stink before the camera actually shipped they might have substituted a Nikon USA camera just to prevent even more stink...even though they would suffer a loss.

Got one, made in Thailand. No warranty. Got it to have as a back-up. Gets the most use as it fits very well and has a decent, uncomplicated menu. Taken a lot of abuse in the time I have had it, (not intentional) and it keeps on ticking. Did have some issues with having to clean the sensor, same problem as the 600, but not that hard to do. I did check, yes it is a 610 and not a relabeled 600. Pretty simple learning curve going from film to digital with it.

You've shown a continuously upbeat attitude here, and that's great. Whatever happens with this story, you'll always have that, and my--and many others here--respect for that.

Sounds like things may work out OK for you after all. Best of luck, and lesson learned,

See, a lot of us are old and we have too much time on our hands so we mind everyone else's business.

More will be revealed. I have started another thread about it, called "DAXMART Scam Follow-up".
