Thank you Edie for your detailed account of what presented itself to your eyes when viewing my photo. My original intent was to include this image in a panorama of 5 shots, hence the vertical orientation. When I decided to limit myself to a single photo, I was glad that I had captured the ceiling and floors in a single photo. My only regret? I might have framed it differently if I'd known I was only going to use one exposure.

Thanks Earnest. It's nice to return to Academia every now and then to remind me of what it was like back in my college days.

Thank you Amy. When I read the description of this room with dark wood and antique brass fixtures I was drawn to it like a magnet. This photo is almost completely different than what I had imagined but I've learned to go with the flow and capture what is presented to my view. I'm glad it worked out.

Very nice effect, but in addition I would have experimented with fill in flash, diffused and tilted up, with higher shutter speeds to reduce the ambient light infiltration.

The Inman Reading Room at Elon University, accented with dark wood and antique brass fixtures, offers students an attractive setting for quiet study and reflection.

I wanted to photograph this edifice for myself.

This was a photographer's worst nightmare. Internal lighting was so dark I had to boost my ISO considerably to bring out any detail from the shadows, but the sun streaming in through white window slats was blinding. I had to shoot into the sun in order to include the inscription on the far wall which identified the space. Even shooting in AEB, though, I was not able to keep parts of this image from being blown out by the sun (and yes, I know the answer would have been to go back later in the day, but I am not the most patient of fellows).

Thanks Manglesphoto. I know the process I would (could/should) have used if I'd taken a tripod and a cable release, and the room wasn't full of students trying to work in quiet to get their homework done. As it was, I did the best with what I had at hand.

I guess IM always thinking that way because I almost always use a tripod, Just not as steady as I once was.

Thanks marsdad. Luckily I have a fairly extensive toolbox when it comes to filter effects and I'm fairly familiar with their use. It helps.

Thanks for you comments George, but I think flash photography in a reading room where students were busy at their schoolwork might be considered rude and inconsiderate.

Thanks tbohon. I find it has an almost "old world" charm to it.

Thanks Mile ..... the only way to combine all those tonal differences was to combine exposure bracketed frames.
