I Fought the Sun and Sun Won ......
The Inman Reading Room at Elon University, accented with dark wood and antique brass fixtures, offers students an attractive setting for quiet study and reflection.
I wanted to photograph this edifice for myself.
This was a photographer's worst nightmare. Internal lighting was so dark I had to boost my ISO considerably to bring out any detail from the shadows, but the sun streaming in through white window slats was blinding. I had to shoot into the sun in order to include the inscription on the far wall which identified the space. Even shooting in AEB, though, I was not able to keep parts of this image from being blown out by the sun (and yes, I know the answer would have been to go back later in the day, but I am not the most patient of fellows).
Nice job. This would be a good candidate for HDR.
I love the light in this! It adds a lot of interest for me with the shadows and highlights. Also makes it a very warm, welcoming scene.
I'd have moved those two left chairs to line up under the table, but your leaving them that way is more dynamic, shows the room actually gets used. Nice!
The style of furniture, lighting fixtures, and ceiling beams takes me to a different time - then I see students with a laptop. Back to the future :)
I love it just the way it is
great mood

Thanks tradio. I used my Canon 5D MK III's in-camera HDR to take a 3-exposure AEB (-2, 0, +2) composite, so this image has its roots in HDR, just not processed in PhotoMatix or NIK's HDR Pro.
Thanks UXOEOD. I had intended for this to be a panoramic image but the light was so radically different between exposures (even though shot in full Manual mode), it didn't quite work out that way.

Thank you Linda. Thank God for AEB - I was amazed that I got a blown out window and the individual lights shining out from the brass lamps near the ceiling in the same composite shot.

Thank you plessner. The great part about this is that anyone living in our community can walk in, sit down, and avail themselves of the facility. There are even power stations under each desk where one can plug in a laptop and connect to a wifi Internet connection. But I agree with you ..... the design of the place makes one feel good just being there.
Nikon has Active D-Lighting to help with sunlight flooding windows. Does Canon have a similar feature?
Like your composition a lot.

Canon employs something called Auto Light Optimizer and Peripheral Illumination Compensation. I don't know if those are exactly comparable, but I suspect they do many of the same things. Thanks for the compliment on the composition Dave.
Works for me! No need for apologies at a bit of blown sunlight streaming through the windows, adds to the reality of the shot. Very pleasant feel to this one.

Thanks Randy. This was my kind of room - I felt very much at home the moment I walked in, but you should have seen the stir it caused when my camera fired off 3 shots in a row for the AEB exposure.

Beautiful shot Bob.
Thanks Jim. For me, this had an old world "Gentlemen's Club" feel to it. Either that or a posh pub.
