Very moody shot... well done Bob.... the only thing missing is a smoldering cigar in an ashtray with wafting smoke.... :)

I wanted to photograph this edifice for myself.

This was a photographer's worst nightmare. Internal lighting was so dark I had to boost my ISO considerably to bring out any detail from the shadows, but the sun streaming in through white window slats was blinding. I had to shoot into the sun in order to include the inscription on the far wall which identified the space. Even shooting in AEB, though, I was not able to keep parts of this image from being blown out by the sun (and yes, I know the answer would have been to go back later in the day, but I am not the most patient of fellows).

Thanks Jim. The only way that would happen in this non-smoking University would be to create a composite photo. I think I'll pass on that one.

Oh, it is Karin. When I first arrived in the building, I had to ask a professor where the room was located - he turned around and walked me to the front door, telling me this was his favorite place on the whole campus

Looks pretty good considering the circumstances.
Seems to be a pretty nice place to read.

maybe using more exposures with a bigger spread. I saw an ad for a controller that would allow HDR/AEB of up to 99 frames. I wonder what something like that would look like?

Thanks Geoff. It took a bit of wrestling but I finally got the light half-way subdued.

Thanks Jerry. If this were anyplace other than a public reading room (almost like a library), I might have brought in a tripod and a leash hookup to my laptop, but I shot handheld for my first visit. Perhaps I will go back someday.

I rather like the photo the way it is. There's an old-style academic atmosphere about it.

Thanks Jay. It's a very comfortable place. I can only assume that the large upholstered chairs by the outside windows were meant for people to sit and talk in quiet conversation.

I can see why it's his favorite, I like the effect you used also.
