I'm going to be off the grid for awhile, so I won't see your comments. But if anyone has any suggestions on how to sort all this out, I'd appreciate it!

I bought an EOS 5D Mk III with a printer, and the combined rebates were to be $650. I turned in all the paperwork required. Got a notice that it was an "invalid sales receipt." Contacted B&H (seller). They say they're working on it, but no concrete resolution in the offing. Called Canon. They referred me to the company handling the rebates. Called that company. All they will say is that I have 30 days in which to turn in the paperwork. But they won't tell me what was wrong with the sales receipt I turned in. They won't answer any questions. They will only give the one statement. I've tried e-mailing them, but get absolutely no response.

I'm beginning to wonder if the rebate offer was a hoax. I wouldn't want to think Canon would stoop to that in order to sell product. But they certainly need to be a bit more considerate in helping buyers wade through their brick walls!

Just griping A LOT!!!!!

I doubt very much that Canon is unwilling to honor the terms of it's rebates. I've gotten 5 or 6 with no issues. What are you sending in as a receipt? Is it a scan of the B&H receipt that came with the camera? Have you blanked out any info? B&H receipts normally contain no sensitive info, such as credit card numbers. If you don't have the original receipt you can download it from B&H. If you send in a good copy of the B&H receipt you should have no issues. If you do, then you need to raise Hell with Canon until you get results. It's their rebate, not the company handling it. I would remind them of that.

It's doubtful it's canon if you purchase from B&H in NY let them figure it out for you after all they sold the goods to you.

If you are not going to see the comments and suggestions, what's the point of asking?

I stay away from any "offers" promising rebates....have had too many turned down as "invalid" but with no explanation of what is wrong. My guess is that the companies handling the rebates get a bonus for every rebate request they deny...if the manufacturers go along with this type of fraud then they are complicit in the deception.

So what is the point if you will not read the answer???

What is the point of this answer since I assume you will not read it?

Waste of time all around, as usual.

Part of your problem stems from the fact that neither Canon nor B&H have any immediate contact with your program. They hire third party companies to handle all the details. Some third party companies are better than other. Your real problem is getting into contact with THAT company. Good luck.

I have never purchased camera gear that had a rebate.
But I know that many here on UHH alone have done so.
These offers are not new at Canon, they've had lots of them. Suddenly someone has a problem?!
It does not even make sense that they would use a different handling company every time? At Canon this seems it would be business as usual.
But the seller should certainly know how they should go about selling so that one could receive the deal/rebate.
Did you use the correct credit card? I know in the past, many of the deals were if you used an AmEx card. ;-)

Thanks to all of you who have answered thus far. To answer some of the points mentioned, yes I have spoken with B&H, with Canon and with the company who is handling the rebates, as stated in my original post. I will be taking up this issue upon my return to the 21st century.

Someone tell me if US is same as UK on this issue.
In UK if your purchase with a CREDIT card you contract is with the credit card company who would be the people you contacted for what on the surface of it here appears to be bad service from the people who handled the sale.
Is this also the case in US consumer law?
Debit cards however are not covered in the same way.

I got the same reply about a lens I turned in for a rebate last week. Turns out I checked back a couple days later at the same site and it said that it is "in process". Still waiting.........

I'm not sure. Usually contacting the seller does the job but I know that there are times when it is best to contact the CC company. This situation is a bit different though in that it involves a rebate and not the product itself. My guess would be that the CC company would not get involved since there appears to be no issue with the purchased product.

Interesting post. Sony and Nikon use instant rebates, you get the rebate at the point of sales, the rebate is subtracted from the retail price at point of purchase, instant rebate is the way to go. I guess.
