I can't vouch for Nikon, but I know that Sony and Canon have software downloads available from their Web sites which will help a person view and manipulate (i.e., create JPEGs or TIFFs or whatever) RAW images from their cameras.

I sometimes use Picasa if I'm not doing something super important to the photos. It's free, super simple and you can still keep your original raw files if you export them as .jpg

No, your computer will not convert Raw files, however most cameras that shoot Raw will include a disk that will convert your Raw files.

Shooting in the raw is not advisable - especially at this time of year.

No. Can't change it in the camera. You should have software that came with your camera. Load that on your computer. This will help your computer read the NEF files. You can convert them to jpegs for sharing, etc

Really? You can't change it in the camera? My Canon 7D has the ability to edit and convert from RAW to JPG in camera, along with other adjustments I can do in camera. Sadly I don't think you can go from JPG to RAW, but oh well.

You can convert the .NEF to .jpg in camera. Go into the retouch menu and then into the NEF (RAW) processing selection. There are a variety of adjustments you can select. I can do it with my D90 and D7000. Probably all Nikon DSLRs have it.

OOH! I have a D90! Thanks for the info. You never know when you may need to do something like that. There are so many bells and whistles on that thing...I haven't figured them all out yet.
