First, what did you do with the disk that came with your Nikon camera?
Second, if you have it download Nikon Transfer(2) and Nikon ViewNX(2). then download picture using Nikon Transfer(2) and view in ViewNX(2) The (2) designates 2nd edition of the program used by newer cameras.

Your computer is not able to convert raw files into something that can be viewed. You need a conversion program to convert the raw file into a jpg or a tif file so you can see it. A program, on a CD, should have come with your camera. You need to install that program on your computer then you use that program to convert your NEF file into a jpg. Lightroom and Photoshop elements will also do that.

True! I second this notion.

No sweat, Lori, just get one of the picture handeling programs for nef images. You will want to be able to work with raw files sooner or later.
Go here: http://www.nikonusa.com/en/About-Nikon/Search.page?q=viewnx2%20download

When I got my camera last July I immediately registered it and downloaded ViewNX2.
Later, I decided to get Adobe Elements 12 and use that as an additional program to work with picture files.
Both will open RAW(NEF) or jpg from my Nikon.

I hope you can get your files opened and saved in your choice of format.
Good Luck. ;)

No. Can't change it in the camera. You should have software that came with your camera. Load that on your computer. This will help your computer read the NEF files. You can convert them to jpegs for sharing, etc

If you are using Nikon's ViewNX, go to the website and download/update to the newest version.(link that SonnyE gave you) Depending on your camera, many times there are little tweaks to the program that can help you get even better results from your images. The disc they send with teh cameras can be out of date by the time it gets to the consumer.

Nikon Transfer 2 is built into View NX2. If you don't have the CD you can download View NX2 free from Nikon's website. The nice thing about Transfer 2 is that it creates a new folder for you when it transfers files. It keeps track of the numbers and keeps numbering the folders in sequence. You can then save the .NEF as a .jpeg file.

You can download Irfanview, a great processing program for free.
