Yah, and also baffling is that Nikon evolved their F1 to the F2 and the F3 etc while Canon seemed to be stuck on the F1 initially and simply named the new one the New F1.

But as to the F1 name, companies spend inordinate sums of money and research to figure out how best to seduce us. These studies and dollars usually end up with a product name that is supposed to make us lust for the new product.

Alas it works. I often come home from a store wondering why I purchased a particular brand of soap or whatever. Did I make a rational decision or did a marketer figure out what buttons to push in me? I can't answer that question and I'm not sure I'd want to know the answer anyway.

I guess Canon and Nikon, when they developed their top cameras maybe hired the same company to dream up a name? I wonder who got the bargain? I can't remember which company started with the F1 name and which one came second. I wonder too how they got around infringing on each other's trademark name.

And what about those names that ended up on the cutting room floor?:

The FTP, FA, or Fu or the the Fu2?

My new year's resolution was to stay out of these Canon v. Nikon discussions and to concentrate on taking pics. But it is hard.

Gosh, that picture of raising the flag is really moving. Look at all the junk those soldiers had to struggle over to raise that flag. All those Canon cameras sacrificed so that some soldiers could finally raise the flag and be photographed by a Nikon which, of course is as it should be.

Let us hail Canon and pin a medal on them after which we can once again fetch our Nikons and continue to capture all the other important scenes on this planet.

I suspect it may just be a matter of style!

Yes, you are quite right. I too lost people in the war it just wasn't in the States, it was in Europe where I am initially from. I'm also not an American so I wasn't aware of how sensitive people seem to be about this. It makes me wonder why that picture was posted in the first place it was going to cause such a reaction but then I don't pretend to understand your perspectives anyway.

It would seem you are the only one taking issue with the flag raising on Mt Suribachi, and the definition of Semper Fi, which I posted in response to a previous post. However, that being said, you being a canadian and probably not understanding the significance of the photograph to Marines, you made an ass out of yourself with an absurd post trying to be cute in the Canon/Nikon wars.

FYI; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Suribachi

Quite so! Both cameras are similar in quality. But they do differ as well. Every time I pick up a Canon I have to look for the on button whereas the Nikons have it in the same place all the time. And the Canon menus don't compare well to the Nikon ones of course.

The Nikon menus are designed for those who can think and are intellectually astute. They want to quickly get their settings done so that they don't miss any pictures.

The Canon folks tend to be intellectually challenged so the menus are overly simplistic and they use shorter words to save time when having to sound out each one before finally achieving comprehension.

But yes, though the Nikons have consistent effective designs and the Canons don't, both do build a high quality product and Canon even performs a valuable public service for someone does have to support the intellectually challenged.

Sorry Wellhiem, but the only thing I remember from the late sixties are these two blondes that picked me up in a van while hitchhiking!

I may have been one on those blondes. It was back in my experimental years. The sixties don't look so great now do they.
Sorry I've just ruined an entire decade.

You know I started this as a bit of fun. Don't take it seriously fellows, they are all good.

Your mistake was thinking it wouldn't be taken seriously and, in some cases, polemically. Canon vs. Nikon degenerates into a preening and pissing contest every time. Something like the old commercial, My dog's BIGGER, BETTER, FASTER, than your dog because he eats Ken-L-Ration. The tune will probably be an ear worm for the rest of the night.

Did it occur to you that perhaps part of the reason is that Canon owns most of the market in the first place.and therefore there are many more Canon's out there to sell? Or that Canon owns the market in terms of entry level dslrs and many of those resales are for people either upgrading to higher level Canon's or have decided that their dslrs are gathering dust while they're using their iPhones. Lots of probable reasons for your very unscientific sampling results other than the ones you are trying to suggest.

Early on Canon had a clear price and quality edge. That's why there is so many devoted Canon users. Today the quality is even maybe slight edge to Nikon with D4s and D750, but price still leans towards Canon. Again in my market Nikon is king but only because the two pro shops push that brand. It all has to do with money
