Sorry Wellhiem, but the only thing I remember from the late sixties are these two blondes that picked me up in a van while hitchhiking!

Agreed. Both camera's are great, so it basically just comes down to personal preference. I started on Canon with an XTI and have upgraded several times. The menu system pretty much stayed consistent. When I played around with a friends Nikon I was completely lost.

Quite so! Both cameras are similar in quality. But they do differ as well. Every time I pick up a Canon I have to look for the on button whereas the Nikons have it in the same place all the time. And the Canon menus don't compare well to the Nikon ones of course.

The Nikon menus are designed for those who can think and are intellectually astute. They want to quickly get their settings done so that they don't miss any pictures.

The Canon folks tend to be intellectually challenged so the menus are overly simplistic and they use shorter words to save time when having to sound out each one before finally achieving comprehension.

But yes, though the Nikons have consistent effective designs and the Canons don't, both do build a high quality product and Canon even performs a valuable public service for someone does have to support the intellectually challenged.

Gosh, that picture of raising the flag is really moving. Look at all the junk those soldiers had to struggle over to raise that flag. All those Canon cameras sacrificed so that some soldiers could finally raise the flag and be photographed by a Nikon which, of course is as it should be.

Let us hail Canon and pin a medal on them after which we can once again fetch our Nikons and continue to capture all the other important scenes on this planet.

But Cannon helped win the war, not Canon!

This is not necessary to make fun of all the sacrifice these Marines made or make light of this. My father lost many friends on this island taking it from the Japs.
Besides Canon and Nikon were enemy corporations and I doubt either product at that time was used by American armed forces.

Big names then were Kodak on our side and Konica on their side.

Yes, you are quite right. I too lost people in the war it just wasn't in the States, it was in Europe where I am initially from. I'm also not an American so I wasn't aware of how sensitive people seem to be about this. It makes me wonder why that picture was posted in the first place it was going to cause such a reaction but then I don't pretend to understand your perspectives anyway.

Hi Sharpshooter ...

Funny you should ask that. I actually started with Canon back in 1970 and migrated to the F1 and a good dozen lenses and other accessories. So yes I have Canon film cameras an FT and an F1. I also still have them but they're in crates and haven't been used for twenty years now.

When I went digital I went Nikon and that's all I shoot now. Hence I'm a die hard Nikon fan.

It's been an interesting ride actually, I feel qualified to talk about both makers with a degree of authority. But normally I don't, that is not a debate that can be won nor should it be, both are important to the well being of photography. Without the two of them competing against each other and collecting lots of die hard fans innovation would likely grind to a halt.

But this thread was intended for fun so I thought I'd step in and have a bit of fun too.

Now I know why they call you sharpshooter ... clearly you can be kinda sharp. No one else had found me out in the past. I better lock that closet door.

May be off topic, but any other characteristics, or was it just the hair color that mattered?

In our neck of the woods that leaves quite a lot open to speculation!

I've always found it curious that once upon a time the two leading camera makers both called their top of the line cameras F1. Actually Nikon F was called F1 to distinquish it from the F2.

Yah, and also baffling is that Nikon evolved their F1 to the F2 and the F3 etc while Canon seemed to be stuck on the F1 initially and simply named the new one the New F1.

But as to the F1 name, companies spend inordinate sums of money and research to figure out how best to seduce us. These studies and dollars usually end up with a product name that is supposed to make us lust for the new product.

Alas it works. I often come home from a store wondering why I purchased a particular brand of soap or whatever. Did I make a rational decision or did a marketer figure out what buttons to push in me? I can't answer that question and I'm not sure I'd want to know the answer anyway.

I guess Canon and Nikon, when they developed their top cameras maybe hired the same company to dream up a name? I wonder who got the bargain? I can't remember which company started with the F1 name and which one came second. I wonder too how they got around infringing on each other's trademark name.
