"Are you sure about that?"

I'm thinking that my track record shows I am most likely not sure about anything. lol

I have taken great video with the T3i but the STM is not utilized to full advantage until the T4i from my understanding.

No, video is not my primary interest just a side advantage.

I agree about the T4i and forwards timing on video auto focus etc., bit is that enough reason to upgrade or do you just really want a new toy?

There is a new Rebel coming soon...!

Silver, I'll agree, it's better than going to bars...., but definately, NOT better than chasing women!!

Two observations:

• Chasing women might result in catching. Then my wife would enter the picture and all thoughts of new equipment would be just a sad memory.

• I am a guy and still alive therefore I want new toys.

I am just trying to clarify my options. Better lens. Better body. (camera body) Sigh . . . .

Silver, in all seriousness, you haven't mentioned, that I've seen, what you shoot. What you shoot completely governs what you will be shooting it with.
So if you can tell us that and be specific, it would certainly make, making a recommendation much easier! ;-)

If I wanted to upgrade my APS-C sensor based camera to allow me to avoid purchasing new lenses what camera body would you recommend?

So I am curious, having followed the thread. Why do you want to avoid buying new lenses or whatever? I also have a T3i, and sure, I would also like a 7DII, but can't justify it right now.

However, I have not stopped spending money on glass or other things that extend the capabilities of my system. When I can justify swapping out the T3i all the other things will all get an incremental benefit. In the meantime I can do much more with my basic T3i than I could previously.

The used tripod and head(s) I got recently cost more than the T3i body...., and I see the benefit....

What is it specifically, that the T3i can't do for you?

When I first found this group I felt that I had some focus problems and was not sure if it was lens, camera body, unrealistic expectations or operator error.

Turns out it may have been more of the last two. I have not had a place to go where I could ask questions and receive reasonable and knowledgeable critiques of my efforts. Most places just give you platitudes.

I have learned a lot that I need to apply over the past several days. Unfortunately, I have been grounded due to Mother Natures fondness for clouds and rain recently and have not had a chance to apply what I hope I have learned.

As part of this soul searching I was trying to get input regarding which would be a better investment in the event I can sweet talk my banker. A lens or a body upgrade.

I am not currently in a position to do either atm. My immediate goal is to produce consistent quality images with what I have.

I began shooting in the 1960's while in the military. Then I put it down only to pick it up again after retirement.

Auto Focus, ISO instead of ASA, variable aperture lenses, software that lets you zoom into the pixel level, etc. have all been taking their toll.

To put it succinctly, I am a mess. Trying to sort it all out and see where I should go.

Whew. Sorry to run on so long but you asked.

There are plenty of people on this forum that qualify as a mess. So far I do not count you amongst them!

You seem to be asking sensible questions, based upon some reasonable past knowledge. This is a very complex topic. Most of the old rules still apply, sometimes they get implemented a little differently, but the underlying principles are still mostly the same.

Oh, and <quote reply> helps so we can track responses etc.

Good luck, and take care....

Beginner stuff.

If you're working with a tight budget, perhaps consider a refurbed 7D and upgrade to the 24-105 L lens. You'll get much better results.

Agree with those who say Canon 7D Mark II if budget isn't a consideration. Canon rumor says that a new T6i is coming out soon, may want to wait for that. Good luck.

The T3i is reasonably new. I originally bought a T2i kit thinking that it could also do video. WRONG! lol

Then I bought the T3i body and have been happy with it but I just do not feel that my images are as sharp as I would like them to be.

I also purchased a EF-S 55-250mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM zoom to get the STM only to find out that it only works correctly with the T4i.

I feel like I am living with a real idiot. lol

Now I need to sell the T2i along with the kit zoom and I am trying to see where to go next.

Hopefully, with the help of the members here, I will stop my spiral of half baked decisions and move forward in a sensible manner.

All this for a hobby. I guess it's better than going to bars and chasing women. Those days are definitely over.

Funny, I've done video with my T2i. Now use it as backup. New 70D with sharper and more colorful shots, especially in low light.

My goodness! What splendid pictures! Conclusion: 'Taint the camera, it's the photographer that determines real quality.
