I can shot my canon 40D without the memory card but it does NOT store the images anywhere, I think it's only for demo purposes. In the menu function it has a setting to change it so it will not shot without a memory card. Not that it helps if you forget your memory card, but at least you won't be snapping away thinking your good to go to find out your not.

PS: I keep an extra memory card in my glove box of my car for just in case moments.

might consider putting a "card wallet" on your camera strap with a couple 4 gb cards.
I do, I also carry 2 bodies when I go to shoot anything.
Might be a PHD camera and a dslr or 2 dslrs.
I always always always always always carry extra batteries and cards, ALWAYS.
been there, done that, now I amn prepared

Now may be a good time to consider a camera bag to hold and protect camera, carry spare cards, batteries, lens cleaning fluid and sheets, owners manual, etc.
Well, it could be time......

DB... Downloading straight from your camera "can", just saying can and not will, possibly ruin the software in your camera, if you have something go wrong or have some sort of a glitch while downloading. Much cheaper to replace a memory card than have to send your camera to the factory for repair. I do know of people that had this
happen to them. I did it your way years ago, but not anymore.

If your Sony will let you review the images then they are in an internal memory somewhere and you should be able to retrieve them.
Some cameras have built-in "flash" or buffer memory, which is lost as soon as camera is turned off. Before shut-down, captured images can be transferred to a memory card, or by connection, to a PC.

in the old film days, remember film?
I mis loaded my Minolta, film did not catch the sproket, I failed to notice the take up reel not turning as I "shot" a 36 exposure roll of slides. When I got to the point I knew I had to reload, I discovered my silly booboo. Had to reshoot everything. I LOVE DIGITAL, Instant gratification!

I have a point& shoot "Olympus "D-390, it takes a "DX" card, & it doesn't seem to have a built-in memory. Have tried it with out & it not save any photos. Also bought my 2nd "Samsung" P & Shoot , S-860 a recon. camera , it will not operate with a SD card in it
I even bought the $20.00 2 year warranty and neither the place on internet I buy it from or the insurance would repair it , So that's my last iten ever buy from Samsung & the company I uesd to buy from
By the way ! a camera bag won't do you no good if you forget you only card

My best shots with a cut film camera were on the dark slide. Good luck!

I too, download via USB. I never remove the card from the camera either and I have never had one go bad on me. Neither have I ever missed a shot due to no card in the camera.

I always put a new card in when I take one out that was the way I did my film . Keep more cards by your computer or in a bag by your camera . when you take one out put one in
