You might consider a DX fisheye lens.It will allow you to catch most of the party per shot.Also...you can get close to peoples faces and still capture the background.Have fun.
You CAN take pictures of people's faces with a fisheye, but expect them to hate you for it, especially the women. The wide angle distorts the face terribly. Your 18 - 55 will be the most truthful and forgiving.

The kit lens, 18-55 works well.

I use the 18-200 on my D90 with an SB-600 flash mounted with a $14 plastic diffuser. The 18-200 is great for parties indoors or out, I can easily get group shots and candids.
Something to think about, On christmas at a party I was aked to take a group shot of about 40 people in the house at night.
I was asked because I was the only one with a camera, I had my D7000 and a 35mm lense and o external flash. Not prepared to do this at all. II took the challenge and had everyone in 3 rows, about 9 or 10 in a row. I set my 35mm to it largest opening and and used a make shift diffusser with a napkin for my pop up flash. Took 3 photo of the group to make a panorama.
I took the same photo, 3 times, because not all will look into the camera at the same time. It always happens.
It will work with a little PP.
Just a note that you can do the pics with you lense that came with the camera. ( Just my 2 cent )
Happy New Year )
