I'm a newbie with a nikon d5300. I will be taking many indoor party pictures - what's the best lens?

Hi! Welcome to UHH. You jumped in about the same time I did.
What lenses do you have?
For our family parties and group stuff I prefer my wide angle 10-24mm, and the 18-55mm kit lens that came with my camera.
When you want everybody in, the wide angle gathers them up.
For most everything else, the 18-55mm works a crowd really good. ;)
My bag is doing candid shots, but some posed as well.

You might consider a DX fisheye lens.It will allow you to catch most of the party per shot.Also...you can get close to peoples faces and still capture the background.Have fun.
I have nikon 50mm, 18/200, 18/55
With flash you kit lens will do just fine. You may want to get a clip on diffuser ($5 on eBay) to soften the shadows. If don't want the flash I would go with the 35mm f1.8. With the 50mm you may not be able to get far enough to get the pictures you want. - Dave
I believe I would recommend the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens with vibration compensation. It is f2.8 throughout the entire 17-50mm which I believe is important. I have one and it gets great indoor shots and portraits. It gets wide enough at 17mm to use indoors. 50mm is a little on the short side outdoors but, I can live with it. I use mine for all around photography taking many pictures of antique tractors and barns. Produces some very sharp, well colored images. It does have some distortion at 17mm. Have a GREAT DAY!

For the money you can't beat the 35mm f1.8 if you don't want to use the pop-up flash.
I think you should use your 18-200 and diffuse your flash. The 18-200 will cover all bases. What are you going to do with the photos. You can print 8 x 10 with no problems...
Love this lens.

The Nikon 17-55 is a great lens too. I use it on my D300s as a walk around lens. And it does great in side for family shots.

I am in agreement with SonnyE and think the 18-55 would work well for you.

The kit lens, 18-55 works well.

I think an 18 - 55 zoom gives you wide to portrait which is just about what you need for indoor party. It also is small and light and not expensive - only $99 at B&H.

Nikon's best DX zoom lens!
It's a pro lens designed back when Nikon didn't have a full-frame camera.
Constant maximum aperture of 2.8, sharp, built like a tank (and almost as heavy) expensive, but worth it.
