Even after several cleanings, my Canon iP4500 is still banding when printing photos. It's no big deal because I'm just printing them for reference. When going through the cleaning cycle doesn't work, is there an alternative?
Jerry,
MTBF
(Mean Time Between Failure)
The time the manufacturer calculates before the device starts to show signs of Wear. So as a reference our president fell into this category on day 2. (LOL)
Maybe you need a new printer or can get the head replaced if serviceable. Probably the cheapest route would be a new printer. Things tend to be disposable today.
OH.........and Merry Christmas to you and your family
Had a similar problem, Jerry. Turned out that someone had fiddled with the settings menu and while the printer did just fine for text, it was set up wrong for photos. Reviewed the manual and corrected the settings and problem solved.
Of course your mileage may vary. :-)

New printer? I have one upstairs and one or two in the garage. I'll keep this one and play around with it. It still prints text fine.

Text etc is why I have two printers, Canon for photos and Brother MFC for everything else, a whole new Brother printer MFC is cheaper than a full set of inks for my Canon, Bob.

That didn't help either.
Look into the cost and effort required to change print heads... probably time for another $100 printer.

Come on, it's Christmas, treat yourself. You don't live forever!!!!!
It may also be the print head. I have replaced mine in my i9900 and works like new.
I have an Epson and I have the same problem when I print from Photoshop Elements. When I print directly from my Microshop Pictures folder there are no bands.

1) Clean and calibrate more than once.
2) Get an Epson :)
Canon do not stop working after a time and demand a service.Keep your Epson
At the price for a new printer that is the way to go you have old technology in 7 yo printer

When I had that trouble with my canon I removed the printer head and gave that a good cleaning and the it worked. I not sure if I cleaned it the right way but I just keep cleaning it in a pot of warm water and keep changing the water until the water was clear and then used a hair dryer to dry it off good. It worked for me....Rich

jerryc41,
Unfortunately we do not have a sample image of your printing problem. Sometime "banding" can be interpreted as "streaking", where fine lines appear in the same path as the print head travels. Banding usually occurs in the same path as the paper travels.
Either symptom can be caused by excessive ink on the print head making contact with the paper during the print process. Excessive ink on the head body transfers to the paper as the paper passes under the head.
You can perform this simple test on most printers whether the printer uses a front, or rear paper discharge option.
1. Determine if thee banding occurs on plain white 20b paper, on 72b photo glossy paper, or both.
2. With the paper showing the banding, take a fresh sheet, fold it in half, and manually feed it into the print surface. Pass the paper under the head several times and move it sidewise. Remove the paper and observe any traces of ink on the contact side.
3. Perform the above service until no ink appears on a fresh sheet of paper, then fold the paper in quarters and repeat the above cleaning.
It may be easier to open the printer for cartridge replacement to center thee printer head on the carriage.

I have a pixma 4850 and banding occurs if I haven't used it for several weeks. First try a couple of head cleaning cycles and if it is still incorrect try a deep clean. If still incorrect print, check your cartridges and change any that are less than half full. I have used compatibles (from 'The Cartridge people) right from the start and at a cost of £21 per set of all 5 they are about 1/3 the price of Canons replacements. As for quality, the results are indistinguishable from the originals.
