I would never back up my photos. Who needs to save crap?

I do have a back up. HP Simple Save. 1 Tb
1TB on-board, and 1TB Back up.

A few months back now, I formatted it and started fresh.
Kinda like flushing the toilet...

I think I'll go look at it.

I have a web based subscription to an offsite backup. Runs about $5/month. All my photos are backed up, good ones and not so good ones.

I also am the photographer for a local Christmas Tree festival and put most of my photos on the festival's website (most are of local kids with Santa that parents want).

I usually save the original shots on the memory cards, I have a set of all the pictures on the PC and I back that up to an external drive as well.

I kept having to buying new flash drives for the kids to take their homework to school because they would always lose them. Now I have a bunch of them and have started using them to store my photos. Maybe I should just load the ones I want to save on a thread here at UHH for extra protection!

I'm just curious. How many people out there will admit to NOT backing up their photos? Be honest.

And please, no critique of those who respond honestly.

Not enough. Many years ago there was a great poster going around in the early days of PC's. It said: "Jesus Saves, So Should You!"

Now, you just replace save with backup, onsite and offsite.

If you do not, and you lose things you know who to blame.

I visit Taiwan and Hong Kong twice a year. I take 99% of my photos for my enjoyment so I back up every one of them. Then, after reviewing them, I delete any that cannot be repaired in PhotoShop or if they are out of focus or really blown out. I back them up on an external hard drive and usually a DVD-RW.

I back up about once a month. If I were a professional and depended on my images for income, I'd certainly make a back-up everyday.

I've been a computer guy since 1983 - and I always told my clients - there are two basic types of computer users - those who have lost data due to hard drive failure, and those that will.

I use a pair of 2 T hard drives to back up my images - JIC one of the drives fails. I also have some fault tolerance in my desktop, I use a RAID 6 which stripes data across multiple drives and has two parity drives so that I can have up to two drives fail and not suffer any data loss.

After I do a shoot, I edit the photos, getting rid of the ones that I don't want. Then I back up the ones I want to keep in 2 places.

I am notorious for not backing up pictures. More than three years ago I paid a heavy price when someone stole my computer.

A number of years ago, I had a computer crash. I replaced the computer and tried to get all my photos back from an external hard drive. Yes you guessed it, the external hard drive failed!!

I took the hard drive to a couple of computer places and they wanted a ridiculous amount of money (thousands) to see if they could get the photos back with no guarantees. I decided the photos were not worth it.

Here is where it gets interesting. Someone told me to put my hard drive in the freezer and try it. I did this and it didn't work. I put it back in the freezer and forgot about it. About a year later I ran across it in the back of the freezer and plugged it in!! All files were visible and I down loaded them pronto!

Now I use 3 places to back up, 2 externals and main hard drive. I still have everything in one place though so I still could loss everything.

I honestly think about getting an external hard drive, but I never get around to it. I have over 6000 photos on my internal hard drive, one of these days I will be sorry.

I backup regularly and everything is on two external hard drives. Just trying to be responsible. Will it matter in the long run? I don't know. I'm just trying to not have to deal with the inevitable. All mechanical things die. Hopefully, not all at once.

Hate to correct you but ALL things die inevitably
