Photoshop is the best tool for HDR, because you can manually blend exposures with it.

Cool.... I will still make use of the Photomatix - as I have built up so many of my own pre-adjusted Profiles that are saved over the four years of use.
And you can Manually Adjust the existing profiles in Photomatix and rename them.. I really never used "their" presets.... Looked a bit "comic-bookish" to suit my editing and printing tastes.

This is My take on this .. Others will, and should have their own.

My two favorites are Photomatix because of the range and quality of adjustment in tone mapping and fusion, and LR Enfuse, simply because it just merges the exposures beautifully - like working with Photoshop, only faster.

I do like Tony Kuyper's Luminosity Mask action set - really complete treatment of image editing with luminosity-based masking. But there is a time commitment to learning it.

if you're using a Mac, check out MacPhun's Intensify Pro. Lots of good presets including a couple HDR that I use a lot -- be careful not to overdo it, though

I have purchased and watched the HDR tutorial from Trey Radcliff and learned a tremendous amount since he shows you how he takes the photos and processes them. It is a bargain IMHO.

Seems like there's a time commitment to learning Photomatix too, so if you're going to start learning something why not learn the best method instead of the second best?
