BTW Carl, the pop-up flash is used for low light conditions... and the AF works in MUCH darker conditions than the original. MUCH darker and at much greater distances with much better accuracy.

But not only are there more AF points.... 79 compared to 19 on the original, but the ability to control them comes from the A99 AF system with some advances and tweaking so that the A77II AF system is the best that Sony has to offer.

The A77 is a KILLER camera... but the A77II takes it to the next level.

Way to go Cholly on defending the a77II. I have that camera and I still have so much to learn. I upgraded from a Canon T1i, so the difference to me is night and day.

Just installed the new firmware update (ILCA77M2 firmware Ver. 2.0) for the a77ii.
Auto focus response time is a lot faster. Start up time seems much quicker as well.

I noticed you're from Madison. I grew up in South Jackson (Provine 64/USM 69) and my parents lived in Ridgeland until they passed away. I still have relatives there and my son coaches basketball at Loyola in New Orleans. Oddly enough, he was assistant coach for a year at Alcorn State and the head coach there was a former head coach for Provine (way after my time :)). I love the south and keep trying to talk my wife into moving there...

AlohaBob,

That is pretty amazing, I love the south, and I lived in Ridgeland for a while and moved to Madison for the past 10 years.

^^^Funny you should ask.

My best friend in the world is independently wealthy. Since his accident all he does is ride around all day in his truck taking pictures.

He pre-ordered the A77II as soon as it became available. He allows me to "play" with it when he's using his A99. For intents and purposes I keep it until he wants to shoot with it which is about 50% of the time. So I have a great deal of exposure with the camera.

I prefer it to my own A77 and I'll upgrading after the holidays. ;)

In mean time, I'm enjoying shooting it under a variety of conditions that MY camera doesn't cover as well.

Would you please provide some specific information on what you like better than your A77? I have an A77 that I love and was thinking the next upgrade should be an A99 or A7R. Any data would be appreciated.

Only if the eagles have a game going - no football in this house (no TV either).

Bob, I know my A77 in and out and have used it under just about every photographic condition imaginable in the 3 years I've had it. All this is to say that I've EXTREMELY familiar with it's capabilities and operation.

The A77II is a MUCH better camera. It does focus faster... exponentially faster, and the focusing system is as good as any other on the market save the ones on the D4S and 1DX. Additionally, the flexibility is amazing. There are SO many things you can do with the AF system that you can't do with the A77.

Low light photography is also improved. The AF system is much more sensitive now using the pop-up lamp. (The only draw back is when photographing people you have to WARN them that the first flash is NOT the picture being taken! )

Additionally, there is LESS noise, and my favorite low light feature, Multiframe Noise Reduction, has also been improved.

I dislike the loss of the GPS module, and even though I personally don't use NFC I can see how it would come in handy, ESPECIALLY for remote control with a smartphone or tablet. The WiFi module can also be useful, though I don't use it either.

I also like the ability to customize the menu... a feature popular with NEX cameras. It's REALLY nice to be able to lay out the display EXACTLY the way you want it.

I'm still experimenting, and truth be told, you could spend a year learning the in's and out's of this camera before you master it.

I thought the A77 was powerful. Well, the A77II makes it look like a beginners camera!

I LOVE it!

Hi all.

I have been judiciously adding Sony shooters to my buddy list wherever I see them. I now have 82 in my list. We are growing.

Well if I am not I'm on your list, but you can add me. My main camera was a Canon 7D and was a great camera, but I wanted to move to full frame and after much research I purchased a Sony a7R and have no complaints other than battery life, which I just make sure I take a spare with me. Great IQ! Fits my current needs perfectly. Actually looking to adding more equipment from Sony.

I appreciated your post regarding the contrast between the A77 and A77II. While the differences enabled you to justify the upgrade, I'm afraid for me, they do not. I am looking forward to the A99II however, as I believe that will be a phenomenal platform to build from.
