Oregon has many beautiful sites to see so it depends on what you want. U.S. 101 is very scenic but it's all coastal. Crater Lake would be a great place to visit but it's definitely inland and would be a major detour. That being said, with 16 days to fill between San Francisco and Vancouver (assuming it's a one-way road-trip), you can afford the time to take many side trips from the main route you intend to travel.

The Napa Wine Train is an interesting trip. The train ride itself is only so so,but the food and wine more than make up for it. Photo ops also only so so. However, overall it is an interesting thing to do. Make a reservation a few days ahead.

All recommendations are spot on...... you've got your work cut out for you. You could spend 2 months on this trip and still not see everything.... there is so much in between that is the problem(nice one to have) in any case you will have fun a lot beautiful country there.

I agree with staying on 101 instead of I5 except in the very north Cali and southern Oregon area you have mount Shasta, shasta lake, shasta caves, in Oregon. Mount Ashland, The Oregon Caves, The art festivals in the town of Ashland, Crater Lake. Then I would go back to the coast. Don't miss the Oregon dunes. Farther north switch back to I5 in Portland for mount Hood, the Columbia gorge, Multinomah Falls, wind surfers in Hood River. Mount St. Helens volcano

I hope you mean Vancouver BC, Canada. It's really worth the trip and not that much farther north from Seattle. British Columbia (I live in Manitoba...two days east from BC) and it doesn't take much to spend several days sight seeing on the coast and central mainland west of the Rocky Mountains. Don't forget Victoria Island, but it can be expensive getting over. Good luck, envy you as I would love to do that trip but it would be very taxing for me being in my mid 70's...I would have to buy a new Austin Healey ;)

There is, as was said, 2 months worth to be seen from San Francisco to Vancouver. The coast route can be lovely with a lot of photo opportunities. Going north once you get to Port Angeles in Washington, there is a ferry that will take you over to Victoria and a short drive further north will take you to Buschardt Gardens, a must see. On the next trip there is the Feather River from Oroville to Quincy Ca. and then Greenville around Lake Almoner to Susanville and Hwy 395 to Pindelton Oregon then down the Columbia River to Portland Or. That is at least 7 days with a camera and tripod. Have a fun Trip, and feel free to make contact with me if you want more detailed ideas. I am in Ca. now but moving to Port Angeles and the Olympic Peninsula in Feb.

Did you mean Victoria on Vancouver Island which I agree is a very beautiful place.

Also if you are doing San Fran to Vancouver and return to San Fran I would suggest US1 for the northbound trip not southbound unless you really like living on the edge s/b scared take heck out of me from Bodega Bay to San Fran, not doing that again, lol!

Have a great trip

Good to know about the weather. I hadn't considered that it might get a little cooler.

Nooooooooo September is a great month to visit the coast and October is even better. It is actually warmer as the fog has moved offshore. Stay on Highway 1 and 101. I would not touch highway 5. You would miss the best time to visit the coast. From SF visit

Golden Gate
Muir Woods
Point Reyes National Seashore, its cypress tunnels, falls, lighthouse, estuary, elk and many birds
Bowling Ball Beach
Humboldt Bay
Redwoods State Park
Crescent City
Oregon Dunes
Coos Bay
Oregon Redwoods
Heceta Head Lighthouse
Three Capes, etc.

Buy three books, "Photographing California", "Photographing Oregon", "Photographing Washington"

Have fun

All great answers but this is my advice. I've done this trip many times and my favorite is still sticking to Highway 1 and 101 as much as possible. The northern California coast and southern Oregon coast are among the most beautiful in the world. When you get to Washington be sure to drive around the Olympic Loop and then take the ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria then you can cross to Vancouver. It's one of the best road trips in the world and watch for the lighthouses as they are wonderful photo ops. You will have a great trip.

I would like to add my list.
If you have never been to SF, add a couple days
Napa Valley
Now is where you have to make a decision , head towards Reno/Lake Tahoe or up the coast via Hwy#101.
I like the coast for ocean shoots and the redwoods. Then head over to Crater Lake going up Hwy#97 towards Bend. Now take the Cascade scenic Hwy# from Hwy#58 { the scenic hwy will have you seeing many many lakes, 3 sisters mountains, Broken top, mt. Bachelor, and into Bend.
Back on Hwy#97 going North you will see grain fields over rolling hills. Once you reach Hwy#84, head towards Portland. This scenic drive is one of the best I have ever seen in the US.
Well, we have now missed numerous Oregon coast photo opportunities and yes you can drive from Portland to Oregon's wine country and on to Lincoln City. Now on Hwy#101 again head North to Astoria. After Astoria and touring the Astor column plus several museums. I would have you drive back up the Columbia river to Longview, WA. Now you can take in Mt. St. Helens. Continue up I-5, to Mt. Rainier.
You are now close to Seattle and all the museums plus the bays.
After Seattle, I woulds like you to drive East on Hwy#90 to Wentachee, WA.
then on to Leavenworth. After Leavenworth you will drive East viewing the Little Alps to Hwy #I-5. Drive on to Vancouver, BC
Have seen it all. no but you get a little taste of everything the Pacific Northwest has to offer. The total miles without adding any "around the area driving is 2400 miles and about 6 days of highway driving. I would add at least 3-4 days extra just for driving. Now add your day rest time and exploring, taking pictures, and oh eating. I think you will be happy to see Vancouver for a long deserved rest. However, you have seen some of the most worldly areas and I would hope you took thousands of pictures.
