And BTW, when you get to Portland and see the signs to Vancouver, don't get too excited, that's the "other Vancouver". Lol

We're planning a driving trip next year, probably about September, from San Francisco to Vancouver. We've got about sixteen days to play with. I live in the UK but have driven in the USA before so I'm happy about that.

What I'm looking for is good points to stop off, maybe spend a day or two, where I can get some good photography in along the route.

I'm not so familiar with the West Coast, I have stayed in Los Angeles and San Francisco before, so I'm hoping fellow hoggers can maybe recommend some great places to go to.

Previously when I've driven in the USA, touring around, we've just found a motel we liked and booked in. Will I be able to do that on the west Coast?

Any info greatly appreciated.

Mike
We're planning a driving trip next year, probably ... (show quote)

A few:
Point Reyes National Seashore
Multiple stands of Giant Redwoods. You must give some time to sit and marvel at the magnificence of these giants before you even think of opening your camera bag.
Highway 1 in Northern California

Olympic Peninsula in Washington state - especially Olympic National Park.
Islands north of Seattle.

A Midwesterner's short list.

One note, if you go to Victoria. When I went, there were LOTS of tour ships in port. So we opted to NOT go to Buschard Gardens, as there would be tons of people (plus it's really expensive.) As an alternate, a local suggested to visit the grounds of the governors (vice-governor?) house. They're free, open and have lots of beautiful plants and flowers.

Also expensive is "High Tea" at the hotel in Victoria. Tea and a plate with cookies = $$$$$$$$.

Jeff a couple of things to bear in mind is the time of year and the FALL season, means beautiful fall colors in the trees from Southern Oregon to Vancouver BC. And The other is the Cranberry Bogs from Just north of Port Orford, North to central Washington. These are just a few of the wonders you are in for. I so look forward to your photos and commentary if
you have time...

Don't forget the Columbia Gorge between I84 (Oregon) and Hwy 14 (Washington). I believe best seen going East on the 14 and back West on 84. Lots of wine country, awesome views, windsurfers, hiking, etc etc with excellent photo opportunities. You can do the Fruit Loop in Hood River Valley and/or the historic Hwy if you take more than a day here. And even see Mt Hood/Timberline Lodge. Further North off the I5 is Mt Rainier and Mt St Helen's

Also the Willamette Valley has some awesome wine and views on the way back to the beach or coming from the beach. With interesting hotels to boot.

I have taken people on wine and photo tours for years up here. I never tire of it's beauty.

Enjoy your drive whatever you decide I am sure it will be fabulous and filled with many fond memories.
