MT - I know you are a Nikon shooter, how does this lens work with AF-C? I do a lot of motorsport photography, and with new expected safety rules for togs in my part of the world, I may need to go for this longer reach.

Saying that too, I DO like dropping shutter speeds and then panning, and I was wondering if the AF-C response would be quick enough?

I'll post some shots somewhere else so that I am not photo bombing someone else's topic...

With winter in full swing here I have not had a chance to shoot any fast action shots with it. But with the excellent results I had using the old Sigma 150-500mm in AF-C I can only anticipate even better results with the new Sports lens as that's why it has that huge 105mm front element, for sports.

Where are these available for purchase? Seems to be short supply.

Very high demand. Since the Contemporary model will be manufactured in the same department, the demand for the Sport model has pushed back the release date for the Contemporary version.
I pre-ordered 6 of them on the morning of release but didn't get mine shipped out until the second shipment from Japan.

Ok thanks MT Shooter. A friend has a Canon 7D (first gen) and I was not impressed with his Siggy 150-500 for BIF on AI Servo. Not sure though if I could blame him, the camera or the lens really!

Sadly, anything Nikon in this focal range is going to cost a heck of a lot more than the price you quoted.

Is hand holding an issue do you think? Panning at 1/250 or even lower?

I'm considering getting the Sigma lens but the one question in my mind (I know, what mind) is: What is the difference between the "Sports" lens & the "Contemporary" lens. The specifications listed look the same.

Handholding is not an issue performance-wise at all. Where it does become an issue is due to the weight of this beast, its just over 6 pounds, almost identical in weight to my Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 Sports. They make quite a pair when side by side though!

Thanks for the insights MT Shooter! I'll wait and see when you get some action shots posted - sorry, I know they'll be good, but I would like a verdict when you get some to action?

MT. What is your take on the differences of the two lenses. We have talked but about the SB 910 which I'm still having trouble figuring out what settings I should use. Every time I think I got it solved same problem appears. but lets stick to the lens subject. What is your opinion? Maybe Nikonian can chime in too. Oh by the way, I love the D4s. Finally got the David Busch books on it. Quite a few differences & upgrades. Looking forward to your answer. Mike.

The biggest differences are the full weather sealing and the more and larger optical elements of the Sports edition. This lens is designed to be USED and stand up to serious Pro use in the field. The Contemporary is pretty much a mild up grade to the already good 150-500mm model in order to keep it price competitive with the competition. The Sports model is Sigmas way of showing what CAN be done with this focal length zoom. The Sports model will not be made in Sony mount whereas the Contemporary will be.

I hit the order button a couple of nights ago. Can't wait for it to ship. When ever that is. ;)
