I run on SD cards (8gb) and use the compact flash as an overspill facility. You know what it is like when something comes up and there are only a couple of frames left on the main card. This way it is seamless, and you can change the SD card when the pace drops. Just don't forget that you have the extra shots on the CF card though.

I have used both the CF cards that I used with my D300 and SD cards in my 800E. These days I use only SD.

All you really will need if you WANT to use CF cards, would be a 16GB 400X speed CF card. You can use your current SD cards also. The 800E allows you to use either card by itself, or to use both cards in the same ways that you use the two SD cards on the D7100.

How about using an SD adapter in the CF slot?

You can if you want to, but my experiments with SD/CF adapters shows there is clearly a reduction in transfer speed when using them (around 30%). They will do in a pinch, but I don't recommend them as a daily use solution.

I have the D800 and I think that B&H included 16 GB CF and SD cards for both slots when I bought it. The CF is a pain since my laptop only has a SD card slot. I have to use the cable to download or delete images.

I'm preparing an order for a D800e. I didn't realize until recently that they use flashcards and not just regular memory cards like my D7100 does. So, I'm trying to figure out what specs I need so I don't spend more than I need to but, get enough for my needs.

Not professional.
No sports (5fps) shooting but, might like a fast enough write speed on occasion.
primarily for raw (some jpeg).
Enough memory for 200+ shots or so.

Middle to near high end quality and price wise.

Any suggestions appreciated

Just curious. I have a D70 that uses CF cards, but speed isn't a concern.

I didn't know there was an adapter for this, thanks I'll check into it!

Thanks MT. It's good to know I can use just SD cards if need be. I may as well get a CF card also.

I was thinking 16GB just might do....

Thanks again, Bill :)

I have an 800 - which I love. I use 32 MB cards in both slots (1 Sd and 1 CF). When shooting RAW, you can get 400 shots on each card (800 total). Or, save on 1 card as RAW and 1 card as JPG, then your max is 400 frames. It's a great option to have.

BTW you will love the camera! However, the download times are long and you can eat up hard drive storage rather quickly. I suggest getting some external storage with a minimum of 2 TB each!

On my d-800e I use the CF card as an "Overflow" to the SD card

Rather than get a CF card (which doesn't fit directly in my computer) I recently bought a CF (type 1!) adapter that accepts two micro SD cards. It is cheaper than a CF card of the same total capacity and gives you the option of using the adapters that come with the micro SD cards to plug the cards into your computer.

I'm waiting for the micro SD cards to arrive to try it out.

Disagree... you need to understand CF cards before you buy. That includes the fastest and biggest and why. The 16 gb 400x is mediocre. You need faster for video and burst speeds. You can purchase to to 256 GB. Forget about the 400x or 600x designations, look to transfer rates at 150 to 160mb/sec is quite fast. Look also to UDMA 7 listings for current architecture. The D800E produces the largest files of just about any camera out there. You need better than average speeds to manage. BTW, never take the card out of the camera. ALways use a USB cord. The cards fit into a multi-pin slot and the camera and can be bent. Nikon does recommend selected brands on their website. Some brands like Lexar and Sandisk stand behind their products. Others give you lip service. Also note most CF cards are faster than SD. Make your CF primary and the SD as overload.

Look at the OP's specific requirements. Price is his concern and ultra high speed is not required.
As a Lexar dealer there is little I do not know about CF or SD cards and their ratings.

Don't forget your batteries, Boys.
I solved my storage limitations, but learned my lesson about having a fresh battery available to do a quick switch.
Just a gentle reminder. ;)
