I'm preparing an order for a D800e. I didn't realize until recently that they use flashcards and not just regular memory cards like my D7100 does. So, I'm trying to figure out what specs I need so I don't spend more than I need to but, get enough for my needs.

Not professional.
No sports (5fps) shooting but, might like a fast enough write speed on occasion.
primarily for raw (some jpeg).
Enough memory for 200+ shots or so.

Middle to near high end quality and price wise.

Any suggestions appreciated :wink:

All you really will need if you WANT to use CF cards, would be a 16GB 400X speed CF card. You can use your current SD cards also. The 800E allows you to use either card by itself, or to use both cards in the same ways that you use the two SD cards on the D7100.

Thanks MT. It's good to know I can use just SD cards if need be. I may as well get a CF card also.

Thanks for this knowledge I was wondering the same thing for when my d800 gets here tomorrow so I can just use my 64 gig sd card if I wish

Absolutely. No camera that offers dual cards REQUIRES the use of two cards to work properly.

What are the advantages of CF cards? I've seen a few that have RAW on them. Are these optimized for RAW? I mean, I'm sure there must good reasons they are used in the high end or pro cameras. I was surprised at how much bigger they are than SD cards.

good the 64gb sd will hold more than I will shoot before I get back to my computer and I always carry a couple extra just in case

The CF cards are a holdover from the days when CF cards were much faster than SD cards. Today SD cards have caught up and equal CF cards for write speeds, that is why most dual card cameras now take one of each, especially in Pro level bodies.
The cards that say "RAW" on them are simply branded that way and it has nothing to do with their capabilities, just a marketing gimmick.

This is all good to know. But, if I want to use two cards, I will have to have one of each:| However, this information leads me to believe it won't matter which type (CF or SD) card I assign to what function/duty.....correct?

I already have some SD cards and I am eyeballing a smoking deal on some CF cards, so..... :wink:

I solved my storage limitations, but learned my lesson about having a fresh battery available to do a quick switch.
