Jim, I feel so ashamed and such a fool to have spent so much money on cameras and lenses when I could do just as well with a 300.00 camera and free software. Many of my photos are in dim light, or of birds in flight, or taken of birds at quite a distance so I've been played a fool by all the slick Nikon ads and reviews and articles about what I need for less noise, action shots, or distant shots of wildlife. I really thought I needed all that gear, or even much better gear to take the photos I want of birds, insects, and scenery. It must be GAS syndrome. How stupid of me, and so many others here! Stupid, stupid, stupid!!

Can you please suggest the specific $300.00 camera and post processing software to take photos and process them just as good as my D7000 with various Nikon lenses processed with Lightroom 5?

It's amazing what we can learn in this forum!

After 10 pages of UHH members' input, have we seen Jim Bianco again or was he just a troll? Did we get played?

Steve, you're probably right.

We might have gotten played, possibly by a member of this forum, but composing the sarcastic answer was fun. Also, it was good practice for the future, such as when I'm stopped for a traffic ticket or audited by the IRS.

My best answer.....I've never been stopped for speeding when I was going less than 10 miles over the speed limit....I got off with a warning. First time that happened.

I was thinking something more along the line of, "If you're so smart, how come you're just a cop?" That would probably work.

I've had several warnings and several thousand times when I deserved a ticket but a cop wasn't around.

The art of photography is more than just the output, at least for me. There is enjoyment derived from using precise and well crafted tools that allow for creativity and consideration when shooting. These tools, ultimately come at a cost. I guess I enjoy the process as much as I do the images produced and I love using the older manual lenses even though they are more temperamental and require more "work"to get the results that I want, but then that's what it's all about.

When I bough my D800 I gave my grandson (16) my D7100. He takes is everywhere with him and took a class at school. He took it to London and Paris and he did quite well. We're going to NYC for Thanksgiving and he is anxious to go back to B&H (so am I).

We tell our 6 grown kids that our goal is to run out of money in retirement and then move in with them broke!!

I take my granddaughter with me sometimes when we want to shoot some sunsets. She uses my $300 camera because that is all that I have taught her on so far. She takes some great shots but nothing compared to my body and lens combo's. She will be moving up to one of my SLR's soon and then it will be really fun comparing shots!!

Let me put it another way, then. The equipment is only as good as the operator. It's like a high performance race car. A professional racer who know what he's doing with it can accomplish great thing with it. On the other hand, a casual driver who has the same car isn't going to be able to do what the pro driver can do. But it does make for some bragging rights, just having it. The equipment doesn't make the photographer. It helps, but the guy behind the lens needs to know how to use his or her gear and how to take a good photograph.
Let me put it another way, then. The equipment is... (show quote)

Exactly!! ;)

I was/am speaking of the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS. Just go back and read the comments on that camera...... One would think that there could be nothing better in this world..... Now the (what is it) 60x is out and the race is on to get one of those....

Jezz this one has got my head spinning. Here is my 2 cents I have been a photographer since 1973. It is not the equipment you use but it is how you use the equipment you got. One of my best shots was when I was in the Keys and my canon 10 D battery ran out I stopped at a drug store and bought a point and shoot for $49.00 I took a stunning sunset picture that over the years has sold many copies. Shoot with what you got .

Same here, years ago was in Tahiti and shot a sunset with a P&S which made it to a cover of a magazine. Actually think I had nothing to do with it as it was one of the most gorgeous sunsets I have ever seen and I have seen and shot many!!

So since it's not the equipment I suppose you guys have never felt the need to upgrade beyond this level of camera. Right?
