Why buy an expensive camera if you are going to process them anyway, just buy a 300.00 camera you could make the pics just as good. Jim Bianco

Because many people use their camera HEAVILY or like to print large and/or need to crop deep, and can use many of the features available in upper end cameras like weatherproofing, high MP sensors, multiple memory cards, faster and more accurate AF systems, external settings controls rather than menu based controls, much longer shutter life expectancy, and a plethora of lesser reasons. One needs to choose a camera that meets THEIR needs, not the needs of others. If a $300 camera will do the job for you, then by all means get it. If it won't do the job, then buy one that will. Simple.

There is a difference not only in the image but in how the camera functions.

Use a top on the line camera and you will never be satisfied with "El Cheapo".

You get what you pay for nearly all the time.

Because, as we all know, a camera that does not come with at least 15 auto focus points, full weather sealing, all-metal body construction and a separate, dedicated button for nearly every camera function is simply not capable of producing acceptable images. Other than by lucky accident, of course!

Jim, welcome to the Hog.
How long you been doing this? I mean taking pics?
Jim, if you were going to race at Indianapolis, would you use the family sedan?
If your goal is to always get groceries and just get to work, then yes, a $300 family sedan of a camera would be more than enough. But to some, $300 IS expensive!!

Depending on your goals and standards, and expectations, the results you achieve from a $300 camera body vs a $3000 camera body with a better sensor, better feature set, and better specifications, may be quite different and will often not be "just as good" to a discerning photographer. That of course doesn't even take into account the difference between kit lenses and better quality optics. I'm not sure what your assumption is based on.
