That's a perfectly good lens, but, on your camera body, not all that wide, being equal to a 24-36mm lens on a full frame camera. You might try the Sigma 8-16. I used to use one when I shot Nikon and it's a really good lens.

Hi I have a nikon d90 I just purchased a tokina 11-16 mm if you read the reviews it is a great lens.nikon is too expensive and you will find the reviews comparing both are very close.at the same time you get a wider lens for half the money.suggest you look on e bay you may find a deal.by the way tokina makes this lens for nikon and canon so be sure you select the right lens.hope this helps. Tony

I got mine from a UHHer for $600. It was in brand new condition. It took fabulous images with my D5100. It will again as my wife now wants it for the D5100 which she got when I went FX.

The ONLY downside of it is that there is no VR. I didn't find that an issue, though, because my use of it was almost always on a tripod where you turn VR off anyway. The reason for that was I used it for landscapes where you want lowest ISO and high f-stop, yielding long exposures.

You need to use "quote reply" when posting such a note as we have no idea what "That" refers to. Several lenses have been discussed above your post.

But it would have to be a 16-something I guess.

Yes, the 10 or 11 lower end is what you want for a D5100 with it's APS-C sensor.

You could also consider the Sigma 10-20mm. Also a decent lens for the price. You might shop around as any of the lenses mentioned with somewhere in the 10-15mm range at the low end will be nice with a cropped sensor. You don't have to spend a lot to get a decent lens nowadays.

I'm sorry but if your saying the 10-24 mm DX is equal to a 24-36 mm then that is just wrong. Please read some of the posts on this thread, about field of view.

The 10-24 on a Nikon DX is equivalent to a 15-36 on an FX due to Nikon's 1.5 crop factor for it's APS-C sensor.

I find my FX 16-35 on my D800 about the same as my 10-24 was on my D5100. Both make fabulous images.

I used the 10-24 on my D800 in full frame mode before I got my 16-35. It works pretty good with little vignetting above about 18mm. And of course it works in DX mode over the full range as well taking images almost identical to the D5100.

Canon's ratio is 1.6.

Exactly correct!
I have used Nikon cameras since 1972, and used to buy strictly Nikkor lenses. Now I own a Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5 (ultra) wide-angel zoom lens, for less than half the cost of the Nikkor equivalent. I am well pleased with the results.

I have the Tamron 10-24mm lens as well and I love it on my D5100. Good price and produces great images. Very sharp.

Yes correct. Phlash46 said it was equivalent to 24-36mm.

The Nikon 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED AF-S DX is a DX lens. Per Nikon the maximum field of view (FOV) is 109/61 deg when mounted to a DX body.

The Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 ED is a full frame lens. Per Nikon the max/min FOV is 114/84 deg when mounted to an FX body.

I have a Nikon 10-24 that I occasionally use with my D7000. It is a great lens, but I just don't use it much.

Let me advise you right now before you buy the extreme wide angle lens that if you plan to use the lens because of its wide view or "take it all" properties you could be using your new lens erroneously.
Wide angle lenses expand the perspective and make the background look farther away than it is. These lenses are most useful when the photographer gets closer to his subject and be prepared for the typical distortions that are difficult to avoid although at times correctable with software.
We are all different and we have different photographic styes. I am more than pleased using a Nikon 12-24 f4 and it has all the wide angle focal lengths that I use.
See if you can borrow or rent the specific lens you have in mind, try it and see if you like what it has to offer. I think that would be the best way to determine if what you have in mind is right for you.
Do not forget that selecting lenses is a very personal decision.

I have the Sigma 10-20 and consider it one of my sharpest lenses.

I had the 10-24 with my D90. I sold it when I went to FX. I never had any problems with it and always enjoyed using it. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I bought it after much discussion. The Tokina 11-16 had just been announced and it was a "hot" item. Problem was that the prices for the Tokina kept going up. By the time I bought, I remember the 10-24 being cheaper than the Tokina. Nonetheless, I believe the Tokina would serve your purposes equally as well.
