OK guys, I have a Nikon D5100 and would like
to get a wide-angle lens...I have been looking at
the Nikon 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Wide-Angle Zoom Lens.
I would like some opinions....don't want to start a war, here.
I'm only a novice....but love taking pictures....

D5100 is a DX camera a 10-24mm lens would be a 15-36MM.

Nit pick - A 10 - 24 mm lens is a 10 -24 mm lens no mater what camera you put in on. On a Nikon DX camera it will give the field of view of a 15 -36 mm lens on a full frame (35mm film) camera. - Dave

Exactly correct!
I have used Nikon cameras since 1972, and used to buy strictly Nikkor lenses. Now I own a Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5 (ultra) wide-angel zoom lens, for less than half the cost of the Nikkor equivalent. I am well pleased with the results.

10-mm FoV
10-mm FoV...

The Nikon 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED AF-S DX is a DX lens. Per Nikon the maximum field of view (FOV) is 109/61 deg when mounted to a DX body.

The Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 ED is a full frame lens. Per Nikon the max/min FOV is 114/84 deg when mounted to an FX body.

While this information may be true, it does not negate Wilson's observation: Lens focal lengths do not change with different sensor formats, but the FoV will.

I personally prefer primes (just ups the load)and use a Nikkor 28mm. It does what I want for most subjects BUT, I am considering the 14-24mm. How is that for ambiguous? ;-)

Boiler aberration?

Is this a special feature of the Tamron lens?
