Seems like another waste of money. The card I now have is perfectly good; only show it about twice a year. Adding an Air Force logo and listing a few minor awards won't impress me or anyone else who sees the card.

Personally, I'd rather see the money spent on some nice outdoor benches outside the VA clinics and hospitals; so crippled vets have a halfway place to sit and rest on the long walk from the parking lot to the waiting areas.

Of course, valet parking would be a very nice benefit; and would provide some jobs for more able-bodied vets. Just our luck, they'd hire some "undocumented visitors" to do the driving ... and we would have to tip them.

I don't know what VA facility you attend, but here in Tucson we have a very nice one.

Benches abound with overhead cover for those in need, all over the place.

They don't have individual valet parking, but they do have those many passenger (like big golf carts) going around the parking lots and picking up people to take them to the different buildings. They also have pick up areas that have cover and phones to call so that they know where to pick you up, in a timely fashion. Tucson is a very large facility. All free. So don't worry about tipping.

If you need assistance they're people there (volunteers)to help you even with VA wheel chairs, and they will take you to your appointments.

By the way, beside using the facility , I volunteer there.

Hi folks, Maury here..I have used a copy of my DD214, reduced in size ,at Lowes, Home Depot and other various retailers and restaurants for military discount..so the new or the old id really isn't necessary to get the discounts. I can't get in the VA systen, not disabled so I do what I can.

Ka2azman, Tucson sounds like a great VA center. In Greenville, SC we have a brand new multi-million dollar clinic that just opened in August.

Compared to the old clinic, this new one is very cold and uninviting; not temperature wise, but the friendly ambiance is missing. All the clinic personnel are hidden away behind sliding glass windows and closed doors, so it's very difficult to interact with anyone.

There is a drop off at the front door, if someone else is driving. But, since I drive I have to take a light weight chair in my trunk so I have something to sit in so I can rest between the parking lot and the inside sitting area. It's like the designers forgot that this clinic is used by handicapped people, as well as able-bodied people. The VA hospitals in Columbia and Charleston do have the golf-cart trams circulating in the parking lots.

But, I'm glad we have the facility, and hopefully I'll get more used to it.

You do not have to be disabled to utilize the VA. Any active duty military veteran with an honorable discharge can get benefits. At this time you may encounter a delay in getting your application processed, but it will happen. Veterans are going to be very active in the political circus, and there are more vets now than in many years. Lots of wars and longer living are factors the war-planners can never get the politicians to take into account before the asses send American troops to meddle overseas.

The reason for the new cards is the magnetic strip on your old card contains your social security number as well as other personal info. The magnetic strip can be read while your ID is in your wallet and in your pocket or purse with the right stuff to steal your ID. Protecting your ID is the only reason for the card redesign and incorporate better security.

I use the VA clinic in Allentown and it has all the comforts you need Nice waiting rooms and a very frendly staff. After 9 11 We were all given ID cards with our photos. We could only could use one entrence. Others were locked down. The county I live in also gave us vets photo ID cards and a booklet of all the places that gave vets a 10% discount. I now have three cards that idenify me as a vet. Almost every where I go now they want to see your ID. DRs office, Bank Drivers Lic. Ins Id exc. I need Id for every thing I do except to vote. I wonder why??

Thanks for this info Dogman, our Home Depot only gives a 10% discount, 4 times a year. Too many contractors abused the discount, but Lowe's gives it every time you make a purchase.
Ill be sure to see if any other business offers us the same discount.

Within the last year I was denied because to much time elapsed..cut off date for my classification was in 2002? If I became disabled due to service connected stuff then they would reconsider. Until then I get no card of any kind. I guess a dime short and a day late. Maury

Something to consider. Maybe you should get a hold of a VA Ombudsman. They do not belong to the VA but help people (free) with problems. They help fill out applications and guide you and make sure the apps get to the right people.

I found them through the telephone book. When I was trying to contact the VA, they were closer and that is how I came to use them. You could ask a VA facility for their number too. They did all right by me.

Hope this helps.

As davidrb states earlier in this thread> "You do not have to be disabled to utilize the VA. Any active duty military veteran with an honorable discharge can get benefits".

Just because you were rejected on a claim does not mean that you can't register with the VA and receive your ID card.

Your representative is up for re-election this coming Nov. Possibly your senator is also subjected to recall. It is amazing how responsive these folks can be when your vote is at stake. Call their offices and turn the screws. GL

I have a service dog also and every place I go I ask if they give veterans a discount not just for myself but I tell other veterans that such places give them discounts.
