Increased security for your personal information - no personally identifiable information is contained on the magnetic stripe or barcode.

A salute to your military service – The emblem of your latest branch of service is displayed on your card. Several special awards will also be listed.

The VHIC replaces the Veteran Identification Card (VIC) and will be issued only to Veterans who are enrolled in the VA health care system.

The idiot will now claim higher employment figures to allow for more government employees, and of course the 47% who don't contribute will swoon over the rising employment of other idiots.

Thanks for the info, Dogman! And just to let vets know, ALWAYS ask if any retailer gives discounts to vets! Lowes gives an automatic 10%; Home Depot, not as generous - believe it is up to the 1st $500 in purchases, though not sure. Movie theaters, restaurants, etc. Even a local pizza shop gave one as soon as they saw my card as I was pulling some out of my wallet!

Thanks for the reminder Heart! I have a rather large kitchen project coming up this spring and I'll be sure to ask for the discount.

I am a veteran of VietNam. I do not go to the VA for health care, but would like to have some kind of card proving I am a veteran. Is there such a thing?

As of last week my Home Depot quit applying the military discount to lumber. Everything else is still 10% off, though.

Seems like another waste of money. The card I now have is perfectly good; only show it about twice a year. Adding an Air Force logo and listing a few minor awards won't impress me or anyone else who sees the card.

Personally, I'd rather see the money spent on some nice outdoor benches outside the VA clinics and hospitals; so crippled vets have a halfway place to sit and rest on the long walk from the parking lot to the waiting areas.

Of course, valet parking would be a very nice benefit; and would provide some jobs for more able-bodied vets. Just our luck, they'd hire some "undocumented visitors" to do the driving ... and we would have to tip them.

To answer your question - yes you can get an ID card from the VA even though you are not in the need of their medical services.

Also some places like Home Depot look at the card and want to see "Service Connected" on it for taking advantage of their discounts, others don't.

Contact your local VA hospital or clinic; generally, they will provide a photo id during preset hours. Some do it same day. Check requirements and hours.
