Imagine if car companies worked that way. You pay $30,000 for a car, but you can never sell it.

Wasn't that Bill Gates in his dealings with IBM for MSDOS?
IIBM wanted to buy DOS, but Bill Gates licensed it to them.... so he got a cut from EVERY PC sold....

Yeah, that was his entry into the millionaire's club. DOS was his big break. Whoever it was at IBM that outsourced the development of DOS probably lived to regret it.

The half bottle of wine scenario is a bit silly because there are many variables to consider. First off, you are not sure that the same amount will be charged every month, the price can go up whenever Adobe wishes. In fact it was going to be $49.95 a month when they began but so many complained and would not follow them, they had to quickly rethink. So they reduced it to $29.95 then down to $9.95 a month. However, that was supposed to be for a limits time period and when more complaints came forward they stated it would be held at that price (for the moment) but they probably will raise it in future.

Another thing to think about is that your current financial state may allow you to afford that half bottle each month right now, but in the future your financial situation may change for the worse. You may no longer be able to afford it. Also you still pay if you have one glass a day or one a month or one every three months. If you bought your half bottle outright, you could have ten glasses a day and not touch the bottle for six months, then have 20 glasses a day then not touch it for 2 years then have 30 a day for the rest of your life and it would not have cost you a penny more than that first purchase.

By having to pay rent for the rest of your life, you also have to pay for internet for the rest of your life, because you will need to be on line to sign in each month or they will shut you down. Being owned by a company for a monthly payment for the rest of my life is not something I want to sign up for. Yes the rented software sits on your computer but you can not access it if you do not pay up each month, forever.

You can make an annual payment of about $120 of you choose. That is $79 cheaper than if you had upgraded from CS5 to CS6 back when you could do that. At the end of the year if you do not want to renew you will still have CS5. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Good point! Some dog breeders try the same thing. You can buy, but they still have all the control, and you can't sell. (Not all breeders, just some.)

That's a completely seperate issue from "going to the cloud."

Adobe Reader tried to do an "update" and add their "cloud." Didn't want it, didn't ask for it, didn't let them do it.

No, I don't like the idea of my stuff going to "clouds" no matter where they stash the information. I am sure that info goes somewhere else other than just the cloud on my computer. Otherwise, why encourage everyone to use a cloud?

I thought it was IBM didn't want to pay a lot to buy it so THEY came up with the clever idea to just license it.

You do not need to store anything on the cloud with that licensing arrangement. You do get access to updates as they happen. Those you download from the cloud, but your stuff is on your computer and in your backups.

You are right, IBM was into outsourcing everything in those days, including software, they already had CP/M and cut a deal with Bill Gates for PC-DOS, but then later Microsoft developed MSDOS and licensed it to anyone with an Intel chip basically...

WOW, did Adobe mess up when they settled on Creative Cloud as their marketing name..... everyone thinks it is cloud based, from storing your images to running the software remotely... my,my, alot of people have the wrong idea.

Another issue is what about when you croak? Adobe will be charging a monthly fee until my wife or kids get around to cancelling. Not sure how that works, haven't croaked just yet, but it is definitely in my future... I get a really bad vibe when something is automatically charging my credit card with no overt action from me. Call me paranoid if you wish, but it is not a comfortable thing to me.

Elements is OK, but, if you use CS much you will not like Elements. It is harder to use, doesn't do a lot of stuff and will frustrate the heck out of you. Elements is nice if you never used CS, but if you have, not so much.
