If I had to choose only between those two, I'd go with the newer technology. If I didn't I choose between an a6000 or em10. Both of those are superior to the canons you're looking at without breaking the bank.
Side comment. Glad we all skip over the t4i. An upgrade with no real advantages.

Several people here have given brief lists of differences, including in-camera HDR, and then kept going. Does this mean that most of us have found little value to HDR? I would have expected HDR to be the primary reason for spending the extra money.

I like HDR - at the right time and image. But I want to use HDR when I want to in post processing - not to have to mess around doing it in camera. Also - my HDR program gives me full control of everything and therefore has to be superior to what a designer considers should be set in camera. I use RAW for a similar reason.
Therefore my answer is that HDR in camera comes right at the very bottom of my must-have list.
IF the only difference between the T3i and the T5i was just the inclusion of HDR - then it wouldn't be worth the extra money, but there is much more than that so I do not see your point in bringing up HDR in this post.
For instance - the ISO range is much greater in the T5i and noise is lower due to the upgraded processor. This - to my mind - is much more useful.

The point in my bringing up HDR in this post was that I wondered why no one was talking about it. When people talk about getting good pictures from smart phones they talk about noise reduction and HDR, amongst other things, so I was wondering about HDR in this context.

In-camera HDR might be an advantage when my wife wants to chimp my camera.
