I WANT TO STEP UP TO A DSLR FOR PICTURE QUALITY. CANON T3I AND T5I ARE THE TWO I HAVE NARROWED IT DOWN TO. CAN I GET SOME FEEDBACK ON QUALITY AND VALUE ?

Generally, the higher the model number, the better upgrade you will get. In this case both cameras are pretty evenly matched. The T5i shoots faster, 5fps to 3.7 fps. and the T5i shoots a little better in low light. Image quality should be about the same for both cameras.

I did a quick Google search and found a lot of information. Here is one link, may not be the best, but it does give a quick summary. Please do not post in all caps, some think that you are yelling. Gary http://thedigitalcamera.net/canon-rebel-t3i-vs-t5i-comparison-whats-the-difference/

One of the better comparison sites is Snapsport. There is one there on comparing those two cameras. You will get great photos with either camera. I own a T3i because of price. The T5i has a better processor because it is newer. Good hunting!

If the T3i is the best you can afford, get it. I started with it (now have a 70D and freaking LOVE it) and it is a super camera, the best seller on Amazon, I think. (Meaning its capabilities for its current price point set it at a peek.) The point is, any camera you have is better than any better imaginary camera you do not have.

If you can afford it, however, get the T5i, no questions asked. It is a better camera and worth the slight dollars more.

Everything on my blog from this point (http://bookofbokeh.wordpress.com/2014/07/08/weir-farm-2/) and earlier was done on a T3i.

And don't let anyone talk you out of an APS-C camera. To my mind they are better than full frame. Let the arguments begin! :-)

t3i and better glass. The t3i is WAY less expensive (body only $499 vs. $699) and nearly as good a camera all round. With a couple hundred extra bucks you can get much better glass.

Are you interested in a touch screen or auto focus in video mode (with STM lens)? Then consider the T5i. Otherwise, the T3i is a good choice. Both cameras are fairly equal in image quality but the technology in the T5i is newer.

If you want a touch screen, in camera HDR and better focus on videos go with the t5i. None of those options were important to me so I went with the t3i. It's a wonderful beginner's dslr that can produce professional results. When you purchase lenses go with ef lenses and not efs. That way if you ever decide to go full frame they will work with that camera too.

Consider a used or refurbished Canon Rebel T4i. It differs not that much from the T5i.

You might even wish to wait for the next iteration of the Rebel, the 750/T6i (or some such designation), reportedly releasing soon or early 2015.

One source of discussion re the next Rebel:

I own and use the Rebel T4i with the new Sigma 17-70mm lens mounted on it as a walk-around kit. Used carefully, this combo produces very good images. See an example below.

I had a T5i and while I can't tell you a specific reason, I wasn't thrilled with it. I sold it and bought a T3i. Sounds pretty silly doesn't it? I thought there was a difference in the clarity of the pictures. The T3i is as good as the T5i unless you specifically want the touch screen and HDR in camera. Just my opinion though. I'm sure others prefer the T5i. Pretty much just depends on what you want and how much you want to spend.

The t3i is technically two versions older than the t5i. However, the differences between the t4i and t5i were very small and virtually irrelevant, so for all intents and purposes the t3i is really only one version older, not two. If you are planning on shooting video a lot, the t5i is a better choice along with an STM lens, even though the t3i takes great video as well. If, however, you plan use the camera for stills only, save the money and buy the t3i. It uses the same sensor. While, as noted, the frame per second rate of the t5i for sports action is a bit higher, and perhaps it also has slightly better low light performance, and of course a touch screen, other than that the two cameras are extremely similar. If photography becomes a passion for you, you will likely outgrow either one in due time. In the meantime I would go with the cheaper t3i.

There does not appear very much difference in quality but the T5i has a 14-bit DIGIC 5 processor and ISO 100-12800 standard, 25600 expanded while the T3i has a DIGIC 4 processor with ISO 100-6400 (Expansion to 12800.

There are also reviews on Youtube.

On Amazon UK the T3i can be bought for about £450 and the T5i for about £480 so the T5i might be worth the extra.

You might be right about getting the t5i as a result of the pricing. Since the OP is using the North American nomenclature of t3i and t5i, I assume he's on this side of the pond, probably in the US. Here the t3i with an 18-55mm lens costs $549 new, and the t5i with an 18-55mm STM lens currently costs $699 with an instant $150 rebate applied. While that is still $150 more than the t3i kit, you are getting both a more advanced body and lens. The STM version of the lens is superior to the older one for stills use and if far superior for video.

I like the idea of the new lens as it has a non-rotating front element at last. I never like to use the bayonet lens-hood on the old design lens as there seems too much risk of damaging the auto focus mechanism. Also - in manual focusing - the tulip shaped lens-hood rorates out of position.
