You have nothing to worry ... I've had a cataract removed from my left eye, and a lens replacement ... al in about 20 minutes ... eye patch for 24 hours and after that I was able to see the serial Number of a $5 bill at about 10 feet :) Though I have a cataract on my right eye, Iam essentially blind of that eye, so no surgery. Have done a lot of digital photography since.

Best wishes, and you;ll do well.

Lloyd

I'm expecting a call from the hospital sometime in February. I have my name on the cancellation list, so I'm hoping it will happen sooner.

Born and raised north of the 49th, I now live and practise Medicine in the US.
There is MUCH to be said for Canadian universal health care access but I cringe when I hear of the wait lists for things readily available in the US. This is not just for elective procedures - also for more urgent things.

PS: Stanley belongs NORTH of the border - reservations now being accepted for the 25th parade in Montreal June 2015 !

PS. I too have developed cataracts - one worse than the other. ETA of need for surgery is a year.
But I am a high myope - meaning severe nearsightedness. My correction is -12 diopters. This means my eyeballs are elongated and I would expect there are other attendant internal issues. Bottom line is a much trickier procedure.
David, is this your situation too ?

I had my cataract surgery this past April. No downside IMO.

- Immediate improvement
- No patches
- No headaches or after effects
- Far vision is now 20/15
- Near vision and astigmatism corrected with a prescription that I DO NOT need most of the time. (Can also be corrected with surgery at additional cost)
- Photography has improved simply because I do not have to account for my eyes when setting up shots.
- I also shoot match grade target pistols and no longer need prescription shooting glasses.

Dave - I do the medical thing for a living. Unless you are having something unusual --I have no idea why you would have an eye patch for a month. It is an 8-10 min procedure and you will notice a significant improvement in the first 48 hrs and will gradually improve over 1 month. You have to be diligent with the drops to prevent an inflammatory response. Talk to your ophthalmologist asap to get clarification and make sure he does lots of cataract surgery. The whole procedure and the intra ocular lenses have changed visual improvement greatly! If you have any ? PM me. Rich

@ HEART - Great sense of humor!!
A friend of mine (80+ years old) had it done. She had problems with the first eye, then went back to the same doctor for the second eye. Now she has to use a magnifying glass to read. Its important, especially to us photographers, to research the doc you plan on using. Ask for references. I'm happy to read so many super results from everyone here!

I had both eyes done, one in March of this year, the other in April. Colors are more vivid now, and I no longer require glasses for distance vision...just OTC reading glasses for close work. Never regretted having the surgery.

I am having cataract surgery on the 29th and 13th. Left eye first and then dominant right eye second. I have been told that I will have to wear and eye patch for several weeks. I can't imagine not being able to make photographs for almost a month. What can any of you who have had this surgery share with me as to what I can expect?

Had my second eye done today and you will be amazed,it's like magic... We are told to wear the eye patch at bed time, just in case you rub your eye during your sleep for four nights, the drops stop completely after four weeks, Ther's no reason why you can't take photos the day after surgery.... All the best..... Regards ringo

I bet you will come back here after it's all done and tell everyone here why did I wait so long. I had i done and was using the good eye the day after, wanted to go to have the other done the day after it was so beautiful. Colors, clarity, reading, and girl watching was picture perfect..............

Made it better. The lenses, depending on how they eventually fit into the pocket, can give you pretty near perfect vision. I can now drive without my glasses and so can buy some really cute sunglasses! My vision went from like 20/80 to 20/25. You're gonna love it!!!

I had the surgery on my right eye a couple of years ago, resulting in incredible improvement in vision in that eye. My left eye is scheduled to be done next month. I am looking forward to it because the surgery on the right eye was so successful. You will be glad you did it.

It sounds like there is never a time when you do not have one good eye. At most it is 2 weeks of taking pictures with your left eye.

Think of it as a chance to explore your horizons.

Or as a therapist once out it to me "Another F***ing opportunity for growth"

I had both eyes done and only had to wear dark glasses for a week. No problem with photography. I have 20/20 vision and do need to wear readers when reading or working on the computer
