I am having cataract surgery on the 29th and 13th. Left eye first and then dominant right eye second. I have been told that I will have to wear and eye patch for several weeks. I can't imagine not being able to make photographs for almost a month. What can any of you who have had this surgery share with me as to what I can expect?

Hi David,
I've had both eyes done over the past two years and I only had to wear the eye patch for 24 hours. I eye will be a little cloudy for 1-2 weeks. Good luck.

Keep it in perspective...if you don't have it done you won't be able to see anything , let alone see through a camera lens.I had both of mine done and yes there is some important aftercare, but if you do as you are asked to do, it will be amazing how much better things are.Good luck with this and I hope it goes smoothly.

You should be able to take pics a day or two after with out any big issues. My first eye went great, wore a patch for 24hrs. Was able to see great right after that. Had drops to put in every few hours for three weeks gradually reducing drops weekly. Second eye was a little harder, wore patch for 24hrs, a bit blurry after that for 24 to 48 hours but then was fine. Mine were done this last April and May. You will be amazed!

Had both eyes don without a problem. After they did the left eye first, I could look down on my white shirt and the left side was bright white and the right side was dull and had a yellowish tint.

The procedures brought back true color, and I only had to wear corrective glasses (Dollar General specials)for up close work.

My eye patch was only on for the day and afterwards only for sleeping. I suggest clarification before you undergo surgery because I haven't heard of anybody with a patch that long.

My cataract surgery re-opened photography to me. And my eyesight is 20/30 in my right eye which for the first time allows me to soot (and do anything else) without glasses and use the viewfinder diopter.

It is a true modern miracle. You should benefit tremendously.

I have had both eyes done within a month and wore the protective patch for a couple days while I slept. I can't believe the difference it made. I have 20/30 vision and use reading glasses sometime, but not always. Nothing to it and the surgery was very simple and pain free. Also, for what it is worth, I am 81 and have the best vision that I have had in 50 years. Keep up with the eye drops as required.

I've had both eyes done plus a touch up when the membrane formed a new lens. I did have stitches but most surgeons don't put them in; that may be the reason for wearing the patch for so long.

Since this is a photo group let's use photo examples...

Color temperature will be cooler.

Contrast will be greatly improved.

Objects will be sharper with less noise.

Low light acuity will improve.

If you are getting corrective lenses, you won't have to struggle to see the entire viewfinder.

You'll be able to soft proof more accurately.

You'll be able to truly enjoy that 36mp sensor. :-) Both of them.

Had left and right eyes done. Leave office with dark glasses and keep them on in sunlight the 1st day. Do not rub eye(s) for 3 days or so. Be careful pressing viewfinder against recently done eye for safety for a day or two. Never heard of 2 or 3 weeks of patches unless you're having an eye replacement.

I had both eyes done last year. With each procedure, I only had to wear the eye patch for 24 hours. I don't know why you would need to wear one that long, that seems very unusual. I had each eye done 1 month apart and it did not affect my photography at all.

Sarge is right, I did also have to wear glasses for one week to prevent pushing on the eye with viewfinder.

I'm looking forward to being able to see clearly. My last eye will be on the 13th and I fly to NYC on the 25th. I am excited because I haven't seen well in 60 years. The doctor told me that my dynamic range will be like a new world. Thanks for the replies.
