How about we call it a now obsolete entry level camera about on par with a D60.

Regardless what Don thinks the xsi is old technology and never was anything more than a entry level camera.
Advances are coming along all the time look what they recently did with the 7D the new 7Dii is much better than the original.
Saying a $600 camera is same as a $6600.00 camera is just foolish.
Next thing he will be telling me that a Tonka lens is as good as my Canon L series lens.
Canon is not going to be your santa clause you get what you pay for.

Smartphones are cameras with very small sensors, no optical zoom, and no viewfinder. This places certain limitations on them, but they can take very good photos when used within their limits. For example, they wouldn't be most people's camera of choice for shooting sports or wildlife. But they would be fine for many other subjects especially in good light.

I view the smartphone as today's low end P&S. They may not be as good as a good dedicated camera, but they may be good enough for many types of photos, and they may be all that many people need.

That said, I don't use one. I prefer to carry my Nikon P7800 or Panasonic LF-1 compact camera. I find them to be better under a wide range of shooting conditions.

Reality is that things progress.
Most recent was digital overthrowing film cameras.
Digital is a fact of life in a lot of ways.
Electronics have been in miniaturization mode from the start.
Enter the cell phones and now their cameras. Features, cram in the features, sell more product.
Up the WOW factor, sell more do-dads.
Cell phone cameras currently have surpassed much of yesterdays camera resolutions.
What makes anybody think that cell phone cameras aren't going to keep reaching for that brass ring of today's digital?
But to write Canon/Nikon a letter?
Do you really think they need your input? :hunf:

Dudes... You are being squeezed out by technology. Just look at the pictures your average smart-phone takes! You'd better do something to keep customers or go the way of the film camera. (Reducing prices comes to mind as a start.)
My Niece's $500 smart phone takes as good a pictures as my Canon SXi. Read the hand writing on the wall dudes...

See what size enlargements you can get from a smartphone and then talk to me. 20 x 30's are not a problem with my real camera...can your niece claim that??? I doubt it!!!

Through the lens, into your brains. Everybody interprets the exposure differently. Stick to the "smart" phone if you like the picture..

I carry a little cheap P&S in my console in case someone hits my car or some other thing that I may want to record.
For things like that they are great but my main interest is shooting wildlife. Try shooting a Bald Eagle with a cell phone sometime. Even my canon 600mm f4 L series lens is too short most of the time I have a 1.4 TC on it.
Most eagles will not let you get very close.

Start pushing them a little, and the interchangeable lens cameras pull ahead quickly.

Comparing your niece's current smart phone with a 6+ year old camera just isn't reasonable. Compare it to today's $500 Canon/Nikon DSLR, and the DSLR still wins for image results. Neither company has been sleeping for the past 6 years.

Agree, except for the low light. These pictures of Irving Berlin's piano and a signed hand written copy of the words to God Bless America, were taken in fairly low light with no flash through a sheet of glass. Both photos were taken with my Samsung Galaxy s5, f/2.2 lens with a 16mp tiny sensor. The low light performance is actually quite credible, all things considered.

I think they *do* need our input, they just are not going to get it from this forum. That doesn't mean the forum can't provide a place for people to share their thoughts.

I am 100% certain that Canon and Nikon are paying attention as smartphones are improving their camera functions and are concerned that they are losing some of their P&S market to smartphones. Lowering prices on their cameras will not get them that market share back because it is not price that is costing them customers. Convenience is the driving force. The kind of person that is happy with a good smartphone camera is looking for convenience and won't buy a sole purpose camera no matter how little it costs. We may soon see Canon and Nikon enter the phone business, I would be surprised if they haven't already been thinking about it.

I just saw a post in a Facebook photography club where the whole gang was posting Blood Moon shots and a young lady shared an image from a Canon SX50 (hope I got that right). Ten percent of the weight and cost and one hundred percent of the quality. The only image that surpassed it was put up by a professional astrophotographer. If I could share that image I would love to do so. Both Nikon and Canon DSLR users were thoroughly impressed. My biggest fear with P&S cameras is durability. However, it is the P&S industry that's coming out with submersible cameras that have a 5 foot drop resistance guarantee. Say what you will but I wish my DSLR came with that.

Before you go all "hater" on me please appreciate that a long time ago... Painters were hating on cameras
Camera users were hating on movie recorders
Film users were hating on digital
We can discuss the subject and it's NOT an attack on your character or equipment.
Great Day All!

CooL.....

Now...

Take The Same image captured by that "High Tech" piece of crap - and send it to Walgreen's for a 24X36 PRINT.

AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN ... DUDE!

Hi SkidooMan,

I place sensor size at the top of the list of things that are important. It's also the primary facet I reference as to why Canon and Nikon need to be innovators instead of competitors.
Look at full frame sensor sales 5 years ago.
50% Canon and 50% Nikon. (Wild guess totaling 100%)
Today, several manufactures like Sony, Leica, and maybe Samsung have entered that arena with full frame P&S models.
Canon and Nikon need to quit watching each other and look behind them. Sony makes 70-80% of the world's camera sensors and their components are found in both Nikon and Canon.
An innovator would not sit quietly for that.
(In my humble opinion)
Great question sir!
