I just received my factory refirb Nikon D800 from Adorama and wanted to compare it with my old and trusty D300s. Here are 2 similar shots taken with the same 24-70 f2.8 lens on different days. Which one was taken with the D800 and why do you think so ?

Hard to say:
Photos taken from different angles. Not sure if same focal length.
On first look; it would appear the first one is the larger sensor (wider view).
If the two shots were from the exact same spot, and focal length I would expect to see a remarkable difference in field of view.
Second shot has the entire length of the boat on right, shot from a different angle than the first. It makes me think the intent was to trick the eye, and offer a perceived wider angle of view.

On screen at 72dpi noise is less apparent, especially with the color saturation, reds and differences in daylight...

I am confident good photos can be had with either body: it would be interesting to see the difference between the two under more similar conditions.

I'd love to see the same boat house shot from the same tripod at same focal length, aperture, shutter speed and ISO...
That would be a fair comparison. It would also be helpful to have downloads of the two shots at high resolution to see what has not been ripped out to make smaller files for on-screen viewing.

But I like the two shots for different reasons.

The 300 has an APS-C sensor which crops at 1.5 which would indicate the top photo - However, not knowing what the lens is set at - it could be either...

If you want to really test this out - shoot the same picture from a tripod with the same settings - ie:
50mm
1/200
F8
200 ISO

And tell us everything is identical except the body...

To me the D800 is the top picture, the resolution seems to be much higher. There seems to be a lot more detail in the first pic. One could play around with settings so one could be fooled. Did you reduce the image size to post? Are these straight from the camera or PP raw images? A lot of unknowns!

#2 is the D800 set to HDR mode & only the D800 has that capability.

No way to tell from the small images other than using the field of view and assumption that the lens settings and camera location are the same, as one responder noted.

If you'd like a comparison you need to load a large file using store original.

The image needs to be taken in the same light with the same camera and lens settings. Of course then the field of view would give it away so you might try the D800 set to DX image area to get a direct comparison.

I wish you'd hit the store box so we could have seen them at better resolution.

That would give away the Exif data & the camera info ...

Do I get to keep the D800 if I get it right?
Since composition and time of day are different I will say image #2 is the D800 because the D800 has a better dynamic range and image #1 has back lighting.

Yes, but UHH policy is to strip Exif data on your photo unless you click the "store original" option... The download will have all Exif data intact.

It's not really a fair test unless you view both photos at the full resolution as taken by the camera.

You can remove the data before you post as store original.
