I went to a meeting of photographers the night before and on the way out I mentioned to the head honcho why did he not mention the magical blood moon eclipse, setting as the sun was rising; a once only probably occurance in a lifetime. "Supposed to be cloudy" well, yes but it was supposed to clear right after, and no one is ever 100% accurate. So I peek outside at like a quarter to 5 and see the full moon in a clear sky, the eclipse is starting in the upper left corner! I check the times, supposed to be full eclipse at 6:50am. So I start gathering my equipment, I don't have a good telephoto on my Nikon, only 200mm. I stand outside the door and shoot a few, but it isn't blood yet and I need my 300mm telephoto but is on my old Canon. even a 200mm telephoto shows only a small moon. So I get my Canon equipment out but the batteries are real low. I figure I still have time so I put em in a charger for an hour. Meanwhile I put cameras in the car, planning to drive down to a waterfront 5 miles down the road. I catch a glimpse of the blood moon starting but it is going behind some buildings. Eventually I am in my car heading down to the point on the Chesapeake, I get a few glimpses of the blood moon out the passenger window. I get to the park, but there is a barrier up so I can't get to the waterfront! The part that looks on the sunrise is open, but the road to the opposite view point where the moon is closed, not open yet, too early(?). I drive to another location, but the sun has come up, the blood moon has gone. I did get some all too brief glimpses of this rare epicurean delight, but no photos! I do hear this is the second of 3 eclipses of the moon within months of each other, maybe next time I can avoid the pitfalls. Once before I saw a lunar eclipse, but didn't have my camera (I was at work), it was spooky, because you can still see it, it was like an ember in the sky. They say you know you are a photographer when you keep wishing you had your camera with you. I think I have the disease!
