I lost the other message that was sent to Nikonian. Trying to make a decision on Canon or Nikon body and a lens in the 24-105mm, f2.8...... Heard that Nikon has the superior processing as regards noise suppression in shadow and background detail. I have had Canon DSLR for 6 years and am increasingly disappointed in Canon quality and consistency. I have around $3 grand to spend initially for one body & one lens. A macro would follow shortly.....so guys give me your recommendation please....thanks

I forgot to mention in my last response that you can turn off the shutter sound on the D3100 - and probably any of the new generation of Nikons. If that's important you can check that out. Also you may want to visit the Nikon web site, They have a digital tutor at the bottom of the camera's info page. I would recommend the D7000 for what your talking about, but the D5100 is no slouch either.

It may be worthwhile to take a "digatutor" tour of these cameras.

In response to Jimberton's long remark:

Indeed, but the OP already indicated he's getting frustrated with Canon quality. However, a friend of mine shoots Canon and has the 100-400mm L and shoots crisp, sharp wonderful photos. If I were recommending Canon, I'd recommend the EOS 5D Mark II (full frame) and the 100-400mm L lens. This, in addition to the 24-105mm L lens that digcamking recommended would be a great start.

I think too much emphasis is placed on the equipment and not enough on the person behind the equipment learning the right techniques. Both brands are great, but it is the person behind the camera that takes the pictures. Some excellent shots have been taken with very simple cameras, and some very bad ones with very sophisticated cameras. I would go with the one that is easiest to use and that you feel comfortable with.

I have Canon but you can't go wrong with either. Find out what you need and what you might be comfortable with. And don't worry, anything you buy will be technically outdated in a few months.
Canon is just now releasing a couple of new cameras and Nikon just announced their d800.
I would wait a bit after the cameras hit the shelves and see how they workout in real situations and then buy.
The bottom line is will the camera give you the images you want.

IMHO I think the bottom line is can you get the images you want regardless of the camera.

Hi
Do take Erv's advice most good camera stores will allow for you to take a few pic's with your card...
I will tell you this I’m partial to Canon I have used them from the late 50's. Good luck on your choice.

I agree, I actually think threads like this are posted to stir the pot. Who cares if you think Nikon is better than Canon, I personally shot Canon, do I think Canon is better than Nikon? Nope, I think they both make some pretty nice cameras.

I went with Canon because I found a 40D with less than 800 clicks on it for $250. That and I think "Canon Girl" sounds sexier than "Nikon Chic"

spoke with a pro-studio photographer from this area. They have been using Nikon's exclusively for 13 years because of the great flesh tones...little post production. I have 5 canons. hum.

IME, most of the noise people associate with the shutter release on SLR & DSLR cameras is actually the mirror flip up mechanism. I'm not aware of any way to eliminate this noise. However, if your camera supports a version of Live View, and I am sure almost all of the ones we're discussing do, you can put the camera in LV or mirror lock-up mode and leave it there.

There is still some noise from the shutter itself. It's a mechanical mechanism in most (all?) DLSRs and I would doubt that it can be muffled completely.

I shoot a Canon 60D, but you might want to consider the new Nikon 800 coming out in March of this year. Here is the link how I found out.

CONCLUSION:Has photography reached that LOW depth, as to which camera.. sounds lower?? I suggest a small hole in a piece of cardboard, and a prolonged exposure as a lower sounding camera sutter....

Your right. I hadn't really thought about or checked it out until now. The D3100 is way quieter than my old D100 and that is quieter then my old Nikon F2s. The "quiet" operation on the D3100 seems to drop the mirror slower and softer.
