I lost the other message that was sent to Nikonian. Trying to make a decision on Canon or Nikon body and a lens in the 24-105mm, f2.8...... Heard that Nikon has the superior processing as regards noise suppression in shadow and background detail. I have had Canon DSLR for 6 years and am increasingly disappointed in Canon quality and consistency. I have around $3 grand to spend initially for one body & one lens. A macro would follow shortly.....so guys give me your recommendation please....thanks

Wow, quite the question... I used Canon film cameras and went with Nikon when I moved to a DSLR. I think you will find premium quality in either brand. I like my D7000 and D3000 bodies but feel comfortable when I've picked up Canon bodies.

I think they play a game of leapfrog in quality so depending on what point in time you look at the market either Canon or Nikon will have the upper hand. For that matter, Sony has some pretty hot models available right now as well :)

You will likely make more of a difference in the photos produced than the camera tech you purchase.

My wife and I went on a photo workshop in Michigan. There were 20+ people in the group and it was about 50-50 between Canon and Nikon shooters. When it came down to presenting our photos to the group, everyone liked my wife's the best. She had a Rebel and everyone was impressed with it.

I have a Nikon D7000 and D90, but I don't think you could go wrong with either one.

Take a look at the Pentax K-5. It's an excellent camera, as good as or better than comparable Canikon models, with what I consider some distinct advantages. Pentax has had the same basic mount since 1976, so every Pentax and 3rd party K-mount lens made since the will fit, without an adapter. Also, the Pentax shake reduction is in the body, not the lens, so any lens that will fit will be stabilized. I have the K-5's little brother, the K-r, and I'm using a 20 year old 50mm prime with it and getting excellent shots. It also means that I'm not paying for the IS/VR features with every lens.

With a $3k budget I think you should also be looking at a full frame camera. Unfortunately, Pentax hasn't released a full frame DSLR (yet!), but the Canon 5D MkII is within your budget and would leave about $800 for lenses.

I have found a few things out lately I'm shooting a Canon 40D and a Nikon D200 one thing I've noticed is that Nikon shutter's are a lot louder then Canons are, I've checked out six different Nikon's and three Canons and all the Nikon's have louder shutters, I shoot a lot of wildlife and it really makes a big difference when your close

The new D800 would be the way to go if you want to spend 3 grand on an awesome brand of camera. I believe it is a full frame. You might as well start out in the hierarchy if you can. I'm envious. I have the D3100 and I love it.
Good luck and enjoy.

I would go to a real camera store and hold and feel every camera you think you would like. Take a sd card with you and shoot around the store with each one. That will give you something to compare when you get home.
But I think you will see the difference with the Nikon :-D :-D

who or where did you hear that "nikon has the superior processing"? rubbish. it would be a shame if you made that 3 grand investment only to find out that you were the dissappointing factor in quality and consistency. i recommend you stick with canon, keep your dslr body and invest in some nice canon lenses.

How about what else you'll get?
Nikon has a deeper set of used equipment, and rules the wide angles. People go to great expense to put a Nikon 14-24 on a Canon. Nikon also has the better 3D color metering.
Canon rules the lightweight pro segment (f4 pro lenses). Also the fastest primes and most tilt shift lenses.
Many third party lenses have trouble with focus on Canon.
The body is probably the least in this decision, but Nikon has 1x and 1.5x bodies, Canon 1x 1.3x and 1.6x bodies.
I can't stand the feel of the cheap Canons (Rebels). That's just me, but it is cheap feeling plastic.

also look at sony pentax and olympus. all the major players cameras are good. there isn't a dog in the bunch anymore. sony won pop photos camera of the year twice in a row. never been done before so their has got to be something good with their cameras.
