I've done the same thing using Microsoft Works' Database.
I've created categories: CA - camera, incl battery & charge; LE - lens; FL - flash; FI - filter, AC-accessories; RE- reference; SO-software; SU- support.
I like the data base because I can sort the list by whatever field(s) I have - for example - if I want to list the lenses I have by maker and date of purchase. I can then create a report showing only those items. By including the cost, I can get the total of all that I have spent, and I can filter out what I no longer have to see the value of what I still have.

I suppose some could call me compulsive, but that's okay. I tend to make lists, charts, and tables to keep track of things. One of my most useful creations is a photographic equipment inventory in WordPerfect.
I made a table that shows item, cost, serial number, and date of purchase. Imagine forgetting you own a D610 and going out and buying another one. This list can save you that unnecessary expense.
If someone asks what wide angle lens I have, I can find the brand, model, and price with a quick look at the chart. I could even add up the Cost column and see how much I have "invested" (like it's really an investment :D) in photography. I've never done this because it would ruin my day. I find myself using this inventory several times a week, both for UHH and my own information.
When someone asks about protective filters, I can consult my table and see that I have the Hoya HMC Haze UV (0) filter.
At the end of the listing, there is a section for items I've sold.
A list like this would probably be good for insurance purposes, too.

Jerry, having a computer background, I designed a database for my images. Since the equipment I use is also included in the information for each photo, I have an extensive database of everything I use. In addition, all of my Nikon equipment is registered with my account with Nikon USA. I also have detailed photos of everything I use. I hope the only reason I need that database is to keep track of photos.

I finally found the answer to a question posed in another thread titled
"When do you realize you have too many cameras???"http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-245216-1.html
WORDPERFECT?!?!?!!?!?!?!!? lol
Jerry,
You are not alone - maybe the using WordPerfect part  - in keeping an inventory of your camera gear. I keep track of mine in Excel, but go one step further. I scan an image of my receipt as I buy anything new/used and add a separate tab to my inventory spreadsheet for each piece of gear where I have a copy of the receipt image. The file size is getting a little large but I still can e-mail it to myself before any international trips to have available if there are any questions at customs (time and date stamped before the trip). If I will only be carrying a small portion of my gear I delete off what I will not have with me and save the file with the trip name and dates with only the gear that I will have with me to avoid the question of where is the rest of this stuff???

My State Representative supplies inventory books to keep a record of firearms. I have a couple of copies that I converted to use for my photographic equipment. Their free and work great.
Unless you're sure your gear will never get stolen, Lenstag (
http://lenstag.com ) is a good place to list your high-priced gear.
I have mine on an excel spreadsheet.
I just left for. 6 month vacation and did a photo inventory of everything I own including all my vehicles etc. I feel better knowing if something happened the pictures would help jog my memory when dealing with our insurance.

Jerry, this is actually pretty funny!
It's pretty obvious that some here have a LOT of gear. A spread sheet could certainly be obviously useful. Especially if your house burned to the ground with ALL your gear in it. Especially if the list survived.
I do have a file with every receipt for everything I have purchased new/used and I wright the cost and date of things I buy from individuals and it goes into the file.
BUT, I certainly don't need to consult it, let alone once a week!!
I'm not likely to forget what my camera is! And yes, I have a few lenses. Though I know exactly what I have, I couldn't tell you how many lenses I have!?
Jerry, I don't WANT to know how much/many I have.
J. B. Hunt once said, "if a man knows how many he has, he hasn't got very many"!!

PS, Jerry, apart from the pages and pages of list, don't forget to photograph everything!!!
I am one for spreadsheets myself. What I don't like is people giving advice to others who have never had a specific item in hand and relies on Internet reviews for their advice. Nothing wrong with a systematic approach with anything.
It's called Anal Retentive Behavior. Counseling and drugs will relieve the symptoms
