I suppose some could call me compulsive, but that's okay. I tend to make lists, charts, and tables to keep track of things. One of my most useful creations is a photographic equipment inventory in WordPerfect.

I made a table that shows item, cost, serial number, and date of purchase. Imagine forgetting you own a D610 and going out and buying another one. This list can save you that unnecessary expense.

If someone asks what wide angle lens I have, I can find the brand, model, and price with a quick look at the chart. I could even add up the Cost column and see how much I have "invested" (like it's really an investment :D) in photography. I've never done this because it would ruin my day. I find myself using this inventory several times a week, both for UHH and my own information.

When someone asks about protective filters, I can consult my table and see that I have the Hoya HMC Haze UV (0) filter.

At the end of the listing, there is a section for items I've sold.

A list like this would probably be good for insurance purposes, too.

We are kindred spirits, Jerry. In 1995, my home was robbed while I was at a friend's for Thanksgiving dinner. Back door broken down (not in) like a football player had used it as a tackling dummy. I had a spreadsheet with my music CD collection in it, including many rare blues disks. State Farm had never seen anything like it and was in the process of testing out a new supplier in Indiana. They were able to replace over 200 of the disks and pay me for the rest. I go through my house about once every 6 months with video running describing what's in each room. It really pays off if you ever have the need...

Great idea. For insurance, if you don't have a personal effects policy with each item separately listed, it won't all be covered if you have over the limit anyway!

I am in the same boat !! I use QPRO Spreadsheet Software ... I keep an inventory of my cameras, their serial number, date of purchase, sourse, price ... I have a page for cameras, one for lenses, one for flashes, one miscellaneous (carrying cases, special cords, backgrounds .. well, you name it) ...

I'm glad to be one of the group.

Have a nice day

Lloyd

I do the same thing. First page is cameras, then lenses/filters, etc.

Another good resource is Quicken. If I want to see when or where I bought something, I check Quicken.

Good to have a list with DOP, cost, serial numbers, etc of all your equipment on a spreadsheet. Just recently discovered you can add non-Nikon items to the inventory on Nikon's site so I also now have duplicated my inventory on the web with Nikon- two places are better than one. ;)

Thanks for that. Good to know. I have to remember to go back and delete items I've sold.

A bunch of good ideas on both camera and household inventory for insurance purposes.

I keep a chart on my lenses, filters, hoods and step-up rings. Not really for insurance purposes in case of theft, but so that I know which filter size each lens takes without needing to look at the lens. Often I like to travel light and keep a limited amount of accessories on me. It's happened a few times in the past that I've brought along the wrong filter or lens hood because I assumed the lens took 55mm rather than 52mm. Looking at the chart before leaving home, I can decide on my options.

Great idea. After each significant update of the list, perhaps date and email it to yourself if you have a gmail/yahoo/hotmail/etc account, that will keep it accessible if the computer is also stolen.

Great idea! I use something similar but I also staple the receipt and copy the serial number on the front page of my warranty/instruction booklet as proof of ownership.

Great practice, for many reasons. Make sure you keep a copy off-site, like in a safe deposit box or at a friend's house. If you have some type of loss and lose the list, too, it won't do you any good if you don't have a copy somewhere.

I have separate insurance, APA, on my camera gear. The insurance company has a complete list with all the pertinent data. It is different than homeowners insurance.
