Lovely shot. It's great to see what you can do with an unguided 30-sec. exposure - you get the foreground trees in focus, and it's only when expanded to the max that you see just a slight beginning of star trailing. Excellent low light performance and noise management.

Thank you. I have found that if I go with a lens longer than 17mm I have to shorten the exposure times as the star trails become more evident very fast. I like F4 to F5.6 better than F2.8 for these shots, especially when I have foreground considerations like the tree tops. I have shot the D800's at ISO 6400 on many occasions, and never had a noise issue that was beyond reason.
I took this shot up through the trees of the Milky Way galaxy, there was a fairly small opening through the trees where I shot. The light on the trees was from other campers campfires. I did increase Vibrance and saturation a little in Photoshop just to add interest and a little more color to the scene.
When I saw the title I knew it was you. Nice shot of the Lights. I'm in Scotland. The 70-200 hasn't come off my camera.
