Only took a few minutes for me.
Hours for me too. Good high bandwidth internet connections are still elusive in some areas of the country--like mine.

I purchased the new NIKON D810. What I didn't know is that you have to use NIKON's NX-2 to download your photos. I have ALWAYS used Lightroom to download from my NIKON D3. I thought I could download memory card from the D810 to Lightroom....NOT !! I love the camera but like Lightroom as main software. For those who use NX-2 vs Lightroom can you give me some discussion as how you like NX-2 vs Lightroom or vice versus.
Thank you
No problem with Light room 5.
When I first tried to download my D810 pics, I had the same issue with ligntroom. I clicked on help in lightroom and downloaded the newest raw converter and that was all it took. Ligntroom works fine with my D810. I had to do the same thing with photoshop. Hope this helps.

It has to be the latest LR5 (or at least the latest ACR, 8.6).
Are you sure you can't drag them into a folder on your desktop, and then do which them what ever you want??

They still will not open in that version of LR, which I expect is the primary goal.
Click on help in lightroom and download the latest raw converter. I had the same issue with my D810. Now it works well with lightroom
The Nikon 810 RAW files Can be viewed and fundamental edits w/Capture NX-D. They don't work w/ Capture NX-2 unless converted to *.tif 's first w/either the included View NX or free downloaded C NX-D. I think Attention to this should be Better Highlighted by Nikon in their Advertisements and Literature. The sudden change in workflow was an unwelcome surprise.
CC Lightroom 5 will convert the D-810 Raw files to Adobe Digital Negative Files (*.dng) during import. It also automatically catalogs them for you. I'm still using the "30 Day Trial" version. It's OK, (good background noise reduction), but the annual agreement is of concern.
I use a new usb 3.0 card reader to put D-810 pics on the HD. Drag and Drop.
If you like to see picture icons on your screen when viewing the folder in Windows, you'll need to down load the "Codec" from Nikon too.

You probably just have to upgrade to version 5.6 of LR or at least update your current version. They add cameras all the time to LR.
This is correct. I had issues before upgrading but after, no problems.
I also recently bought the D810. Had the same problem as I have the older versions of Lightroom and Photoshop CS5. It made me decide to finally upgrade to Photoshop CC - at $120 per year, I'll always have the latest program.
I updated LR to newest release and have no problems opening D 810 straight into LR

I have always used Nikon software to handle NEF files until they are handed off to either PS or Lightroom. It's nothing more than my personal preference. I do believe that Nikon NX2 Capture and View NX2 are now BOTH compatible with the D810. Check the Nikon site for free updates. (I have my software set to let me know when there is an update.)
As for PS and LR, since I don't have a D810, I can't say there is an update, but I'd be shocked if there wasn't one by now!

I have and used LR2, then I bought CS5 haven't used LR since. I never used NX2 until I got my D7100 and Cs5 wouldn't process the raw files so now I use the NX2 to convert raw to Jpeg then process with CS5 , is a bit time consuming but I am extremely happy with the results I achieve
