I purchased the new NIKON D810. What I didn't know is that you have to use NIKON's NX-2 to download your photos. I have ALWAYS used Lightroom to download from my NIKON D3. I thought I could download memory card from the D810 to Lightroom....NOT !! I love the camera but like Lightroom as main software. For those who use NX-2 vs Lightroom can you give me some discussion as how you like NX-2 vs Lightroom or vice versus.
Thank you

I have neither the D810 or lightroom but I seem to remember a similar post. You may have to download a codec or profile to lightroom for it to read the 810 files.

Try a search here on UHH. If not go to adobe. I'm sure you aren't "chained" to Nikons software.

Welcome to the HOGG!

I have a D810. I use LightRoom and Photoshop primarily and I haven't had any problems at all. I also don't use NX-2 or any of Nikon's software.

You probably just have to upgrade to version 5.6 of LR or at least update your current version. They add cameras all the time to LR.

I have used View NX-2, Phase One, LR, and Aperture to download NEF files. You don't have to use View NX-2 but in my trials while the differences were subtle, View NX-2 did the best job of rendering NEF files.

or convert to DNG for free and then import to your version of LR.

I keep View NX2 around on the off chance LR can't get a Photo looking good... before scraping it I try a look at View NX-2 - so far, it has not saved anything that LR could not though :) BUT it takes up minimal disk space ;)

There are two NX 2 programs; Capture and View. Capture does not work with D810 files.

Use View NX 2 (came with the camera) and convert to 16 bit tiff or 8 bit tiff or jpg files. Then use Lightroom.

The 16 bit tiff files will be 207mp. Might tax your computer.

Lightroom 5.6 has support for the D810 NEF files....you can also download the FREE Adobe DNG converter program, and use it to convert your NEF files to DNG then import into your version of Lightroom.

BTW - I rename & convert all of my Nikon NEF files to DNG on import into Lightroom.

Lightroom also makes a backup of my imported NEF files in case I ever need them for any reason. But I work with the DNG files in Lightroom.

You are suggesting OP convert from raw to JPEG before editing with Lightroom?

Your version of LR is older than the camera, so it does not have the specs for the D810's nef files. Updating LR to solve the problem, as will using DNG Converter/Adobe Camera Raw 8.6. I am not sure if you can update only ACR 8.6 and have LR recognize that.

NX2 looks fuzzy to me compared to my ACDSee on two 24 inch monitors.
