I vote for the buckeye. They are all good but I'm a nut for close-ups of nature subjects....well, most any close-up subject. I think the buckeye is phenomenal!

Hoop, but I really like the buck eye also. I am with mommy115 in that I like the focus sharp.

Guess I'll be odd man out, because I prefer the first. It's a very classy shot.

Blessings :-)

If number 1 and 4 were not dead center, but along the lines of the rule of thirds hety would be strong contenders. But the Hoop stick definately gets your attention and keeps it.

I belong to a local Camera Club of about 20 members. Each month we have a photo contest in which members submit a photo based on a monthly theme. The theme this coming month is: Anything round, circular, globular, etc. where the obvious subject of the photo is something around, circular, etc. Attached are 4 photos I took yesterday with next month's contest in mind. If you were choosing, which photo would you submit?

We are allowed to enter three photos and can choose which category, but only one photo per category. Categories are General, Travel, People/Portraits, Nature, Photojournalism and Manipulation.

I've listed my three entries. What do you think?

General Category. Tired feet at NECCC. This was taken at the New England Camera Club Conference held at the U Mass campus. There was a lot of walking around campus and when I went to one of the conferences in the auditorium this person had their feet up behind me in the next section up.

People/Portrait category. Reading with Dad. This is one of the photos from a photo shoot I did of this 4 year old. He was so good, a dream to work with.

This was my travel entry. Veterans Park in Salem, NH.

Jerry, I love the 1st one. Great texture to the photo as well. However, being a huge OSU fan, that may sway my choice.

Greetings Jake. I think cameras were around during the 1940s, but just barely. Certainly no digital cameras. No, this photo was taken at Lincoln Log Cabin State Park, near Charleston, IL during their annual Fall Festival. Groups of volunteers were portraying many different activities that could have been taking place on Thomas Lincoln's farm during the 1840s. Two girls happened to be playing a game of Hoop and Sticks, and I couldn't resist trying to time a shot of the hoop in action. I was using 1/350th in Shutter Priority; all other settings being left to Automatic. I suppose I could have increased the shutter speed a bit, and upped the ISO and gotten a bit more crisp shot, but that's okay with me. I kind of like the slightly blurry "action" of the girl trying to avoid being hit by a missed capture of the hoop.

Hi, Kathy. I have to laugh at the first one, the feet. Reminds me of something I'd see in a doctor's office. Not really a photo I'd vote for, unless all the others in that category were of oozing blisters and bandaged knees,

The "Reading with Dad" is very well composed, and heart-touching. It's a great photo, something Norman Rockwell could have used for a painting.

Veterans Park is also very well composed. Composition is way up there on the judging priority list when it comes to a photograph being good, or great. I like the way your mind works when searching for subject matter -- even the feet photo, which could take a ribbon in the unique category.

Anyone is more than welcome to sharpen the Hoop and Sticks photo if they want. I don't think I even used Un-Sharp Mask on it, which would have helped a little. Actually, I sort of liked the motion-reaction the slight blurring generated in this particular photo. The girl is trying to avoid being hit by a missed capture of the hoop.

Hi, Tracy... I'm beginning to be torn between the Buckeye and the Hoop & Sticks girl. It seems most people like the Hoop & Sticks, but the Buckeye is special too. It was shot at 35x optical zoom quite a ways up in the tree. Comments have been raised as to it being too centered, and yes, I'll agree the Buckeye itself is centered, but the stem and leaf coming in from an angle help negate the centering of the object. That photo isn't cropped. I purposely composed it that way. Opinions vary widely on good composition techniques. Thanks so much for your input.

The shot of the feet I'm hoping will strike a nerve with the judges because it's a camera club entry the judges are all familiar with the annual NECCC conference and all the walking, especially where most of us photo attendees are much older and not as good shape as the normal college students walking the campus. At least that is my theory of entering that shot, I hope I'm right, I'll let you know the outcome.
