Would the 50mm f1.8 for digital be equal to the 50mm f1.8 for film? If it is then what is the big deal? That is(was) the basic kit lens for its time. I used that until I got the 50mm f1.4 then the 55mm f1.2. I would think that digital one wold be more useful in dark(er) applicatons than for other uses. (my comments and thoughts).

Have an AWESOME day :)
I have the Nikon 50mm but in the 1.4 version and I love it. I carry 2 lenses with me on 2 bodies, one is the 50mm and the other is the Tamron 18-270. I shot with the zoom for a long time before I picked up the 50 and one thing I noticed is that your legs now become your zoom. I think it helps with learning composition. The big thing is how little light you need to take photos with this lens and how easily one can attain that bokeh everyone is looking for. As a matter of fact with the 1.4 you need to be careful that you don't get it when you don't want it. I heard that the 1.8 is better in this regard. I think you'll enjoy the new doors this lens will open for you...............lol
only open the 1.4 to 1.8 or 2.0 ,it will help with the focus snd give a better picture when not shot wide open !
When I use(d) the f1.4/f1.2 during Halloween time with film I used Kodacolor ASA/ISO1600. With my DSLR I use 2400-3600 ISO. I sometimes get GRAIN/NOISE but for this kind of application it can work.

Were you shooting in the dark?? I've never had my ISO that high with this lens even when the room is lit by candlelight........
I forgot to mention some background lights but most were outside. There was color shift and grain/noise, but shooting at these extreme levels should be expected? It's effect is acceptable for Halloween parties and haunted house gatherings

I just got my Nikon 50mm f/1.8 about a week ago. I used it this past weekend to shoot pictures of our first grandson and they look good (to me). I love this lens and the price was great 119.95 from B and H Photo.
.......I think you mean $216.00 on BH....

You will love it, it is a great lens; but isn't it a bit late to be asking?
