Cards have gone through a wash cycle "naked" and survived. Many of them are advertised as being waterproof.

There have been stories of P&S cameras that were lost at sea for months, and pictures were recovered from their SD cards.

Good to know. In the future I will look for those marked as waterproof. But I plan on ALWAYS checking my pockets now.

Good idea. I've "laundered money" when I didn't check my pockets.

I got tired of loosing cards so bought a couple of media holsters and attach them to my camera strap, All I have to do is to remember to put spare cards in them! http://optechusa.com/media-holsters.html.

I use SanDisk Extreme SDHC class 10 cards for my digital camera. At times when I am carrying light (no camera bag), I keep an extra card in my pant pocket.

After I washed my pants and then put them in the dryer I found a card when I took them out of the dryer. I left it in my pant pocket by mistake. Even though I had already download the pictures I was kind of worried about damages to my card. It was in the plastic carrying case.

I was very surprised and happy when I inserted my card into my computer and all the photos showed up and the card continues to work. Extreme for a reason or just plain lucky.

It's good to know I'm not the only one to do that. Except that when I did it the card wasn't in the plastic case. That was over a year ago when it happened and the card still works to this day.

One thing to remember about electronics. With small pieces like an SD card, as long as there' no current running through them when they get wet and then are allowed to dry completely there should be no crossing of circuits which causes shorts and thus ruins the workings.

I'd say you're lucky but I'd also say this is pretty normal, wet, completely dry, should work.

Good information, well presented, with chuckles and laughs throughout.

My other thought was - perhaps you need a more 'vigorous' washing machine ?? :D

WIFE!!!! I wash my own cloths!!! she puts whites in with colored towels! I finally wore out my last pair of pink boxers!!!

A cup of Clorox will help get the pink out. Of course better not to pink them up to begin with.

Fortunately my wife knows how to wash clothes, clean, iron, sew and cook. But I still know how to do the same things just as well from my mother teaching her three sons years ago. It helps to know how to do chores.

If you are traveling light then do not wear pants. The SD chips were designed to be small enough to be placed between the back molars and the cheek. This is especially important in cold weather. I can conclude from you comments that you are single; women always check the pockets of pants for money, signs of another woman, nuts bolts and printer ink carts.

ED, I suggest you read the fine print on the product. If you wear pants then cut the pocket bottoms.

PS: Storing memory and batteries in your sock tops works well, that's what I do.

"women always check the pockets of pants for" where did you get that idea? I've been married for 31 years and she leaves coins, kleenex tissues, and pens in both my and her clothing. Luckily no photo filters, thumb drives or SD cards yet. We are both forgetful of "trivia" at times.

Be cautious with bleach, it may dissolve the ink on the card.

Nice to know that SD cards may survive a washing. However. a cell phone won't. Ask my step=daughter. From my own experience, hopping into a swimming pool with with a cell phone in your pocket is also not advisable. Generally yields an expensive paper-weight.
