I use SanDisk Extreme SDHC class 10 cards for my digital camera. At times when I am carrying light (no camera bag), I keep an extra card in my pant pocket.
After I washed my pants and then put them in the dryer I found a card when I took them out of the dryer. I left it in my pant pocket by mistake. Even though I had already download the pictures I was kind of worried about damages to my card. It was in the plastic carrying case.
I was very surprised and happy when I inserted my card into my computer and all the photos showed up and the card continues to work. Extreme for a reason or just plain lucky.

My wife doesn't check pockets of the clothes either. LOL
Better than a BIC pen leaking all over your clothes in the drier. You only do that trick ONE time.... How do I know this?
Those E-cigs don't fair to well after you wash them.

I'm going with lucky. You have exposed the card to harsh chemicals and water. The damage may still show up as a latent failure. I would not trust that card to record or store invaluable photos.
If you are traveling light then do not wear pants. The SD chips were designed to be small enough to be placed between the back molars and the cheek. This is especially important in cold weather. I can conclude from you comments that you are single; women always check the pockets of pants for money, signs of another woman, nuts bolts and printer ink carts.
ED, I suggest you read the fine print on the product. If you wear pants then cut the pocket bottoms.
PS: Storing memory and batteries in your sock tops works well, that's what I do.

Neither extreme nor lucky. Normal.

Cards have gone through a wash cycle "naked" and survived. Many of them are advertised as being waterproof.
There have been stories of P&S cameras that were lost at sea for months, and pictures were recovered from their SD cards.
