If you don't know a camera from a turnip then CR has value.

As the saying goes...jack of all trades, master of none.

CR generally has a problem with things that are expensive. They act like your parents.

I remember awhile back they rated a Corvette only "average" for rusting. Most people know that the Vette has a fibreglas-type body and an under carridge that is pretty much safe from rust.

Every single item in my house was bought because it was top-rated by Consumer Reports. They know best, and I follow their advice.

Seriously, you have to take any evaluation with a grain of salt. If a car is downrated because of a stiff ride, and a stiff ride isn't a negative for you, then disregard that.

Overall, I can't fault CU, but I also interpret their ratings. For example, the top-rated sunscreens are the spray type. I hate the spray-ons, so I use the creams. That doesn't mean the sprays aren't better.

When they compare products, they have advantages over us. They have several brands and models on hand and can switch from one to the other and see the differences. They also have precise testing equipment to obtain objective data.

I might cringe a bit when they rate a Canon over a Nikon (Yes, that really did happen), but I still prefer Nikon.

"Attempting humor or being an asshole" are not the only options. You are incorrect.

From their masthead--"We don't accept paid advertising." For some one who hasn't seen the magazine for 24 years and is dead, flat, demonstrably wrong, you have a lot of chutzpah to be calling someone an asshole.

Maybe you're thinking of "Consumer Digest" which does accept advertising.

C.R. I find comments like calling people an "A-hole" in a photography forum such as this one rude, crude and reprehensible. It's people like you that give good forums like this a bad name. Reprehensible...hmmm....I wonder if you even know what that word means?

I'm with Captain C on this one. What are their qualifications to "rate" anything.

Nope never. You May be thinking of Consumer's Digest. They take adds and let the winners use their logo in their own marketing programs. Little quick dropping the A bomb there ...

They do extensive testing before they rate anything. They are highly qualified professionals who have shown their testing methods on all the national news shows.

Exactly! There are about a thousand better resources available when deciding which camera to buy.

As has been said above CR reports to the average consumer. The average consumer wouldn't know what to do with a high end (anything above a P&S)camera if it fell on him. The average camera after all is a cell phone.

You are both wrong and rude. One sometimes cannot help being wrong; one always has the ability not to be rude. Let's keep UHH civil.
