They are about to release CS6 (I think in April). If you are still in the class that long, you might want to consider waiting until it comes out. Or they might offer CS5 at a discounted rate when the new version comes out.

To upgrade or not to upgrade - always the question. I'll have to see what it has to offer.

Those wishing to upgrade to CS6 need to understand Adobe's new policy. This is from their site:

First off, for anybody currently running the latest major release, Creative Suite 5 (either 5.0, 5.1, or 5.5), you’re fine. You will not be affected by this revision, and will be eligible for the discounted pricing on upgrades when CS6 comes out.

For everyone else, if you’re still running older versions – like CS2, CS3, or CS4 – when CS6 releases, you wouldn’t qualify for that upgrade price break. And customer reaction on this point has been understandibly unfavorable.

Student pricing at: Academic Superstore has it for $179, but I think Amazon might still have it for $159.

You can only upgrade to CS5 if you have CS2, 3, or 4. You cannot upgrade from Elements. If you really want CS5 taking the student discount will be the best bet.

Usually, you can't. But they have special offers every once in awhile, where they do let you upgrade from Elements.

Like I said...it takes patience.

I got mine with my teacher ID. All you should need is your student ID to purchase it.

Right now it is going for $199.00 straight from Adobe. I think I paid around $300 a couple of years ago.

I haven't had a teacher ID in thirteen years. Our community college doesn't issue student IDs for the "Continuing Education" courses. They are one-shot deals.

That's a good price. Bet that means CS6 is coming out soon.

I see the upgrade price is the same. Maybe I'll wait till CS7 is about to be released and get CS6.

I use and recommend Photoshop Elements (I have 8 but I belive it's up to 10 now.) It has all the necessary features of PS and many short cut triks on line to meet most CS tasks. Price aprx $100

Makes no difference what platform you are using Photoshop on, it is almost identical in MAC or PC. You just order it for what you need, it comes with 2 licenses so you can have one of each if you wish, or both for PC etc.

I bought CS5 Extended for $179 at Staples. I had a $10 off cupon so that knocked it down to $169 + tax. (almost 8% here in CA) I got the Student/Teachers edition and (Lucian) is incorrect about coming with 2 licenses. It says right on the box " Restrictions on use: You may purchase only one license of any Adobe Student and Teacher Edition product. This license may be used only on your privately owned computer. Student and Teacher Edition products may not be resold." Although Lucian is correct that "it is almost identical in MAC or PC."

This is the kind of stuff that pisses me off... Thankfully, I don't rely on my old copy of CS3 for anything but stitching to creating panos. Many are not users of Adobe software, but indentured servants of their updates and pricing structure. Fortunately, there are other good products out there for the home user.

Are you a student? Are you a teacher? Cool! Adobe has a deal where you can get the full Photoshop CS5 Extended for just $39 bucks! I am not kidding.

OK, it's actually $39.80 but but seriously that is insane! I'm speechless (If you're not in school, it would be worth it to enroll just for this deal). http://vrge.co/yZOHi0

Good Deal: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended student and teacher edition just $39.80

Yeah... and I'm sure all of us are either a student or a teacher. Good marketing to say the least. The slave ship is waiting for you to board.
