Most airlines will tell you that you do not have the overhead bin space above your seat as guaranteed space for you. All you have that is guaranteed is the space under the seat in front of you. If you are last to board, the overhead bins can be full!

On some airplanes there is very little room under the seats, the space is filled with electronic gear for the rear seat TV's or other things. A friend of mine found this out when switching flights.

All airlines regulations differ. It is a shame they don't all standardize and all have the same rule book.
As been suggested above, contact the airline you are flying with.

The airlines are not the ones checking your carry-on. The TSA does that and their rules are standardized, even though at times it seems that not all of their agents understand that.

I have been refused trying to carry on my monopod in Italy and in Vietnam by the security people. I tried to say it was a walking stick but them knew better.

I just bought a MeFoto tripod that is small enough to fit in my suitcase. My Gitzo is just too big to deal with when flying. The MeFoto has one leg that unscrews and becomes a monopod. Best of both worlds. Think I paid about $200 for it.

Happy shooting
